Pamela Geller and the English Defence League

I followed this story for a bit yesterday. The short of is that the folks at Gates of Vienna are attacking Pamela Geller for calling out the English Defense League for the anti-Semitism in its ranks. I thought I'd blog on this sooner or later, and there's never been a question as to picking sides: Pamela's my friend and she's long been slammed by idiots like Charles Johnson. So now that she's warned some in the EDL leadership it's clear there's going to be no tolerance for this at Atlas Shrugs. Pamela updated with a new post yesterday, "The Evil That Men Do":

Apparently an update is required on the blogwar against Atlas that is being waged by vultures with an altogether nefarious agenda. It's not important, because these bottomfeeders just bang keyboards and jockey for position on the bottom of the food chain. But to be clear .......

I stand by my concern about the increasing antisemitism in the ranks of the admins at the EDL. We have no intention of breaking with the EDL if they purge these antisemitic elements. If they do not, they will be finished as a force for good in England. I was immediately reassured that these rogue elements would be routed out. End of story. This campaign to gang up on Geller by small "counter-jihadists" trying to make a name for themselves clearly is motivated by something enitrely different. Something very ugly and transparent.

And about that Facebook page (pictured), Pamela writes:
There are pages and pages of this kind of stuff. Here is just one example. "Hel Gower" is a powerful EDL administrator. She "liked" this page.
I've read through the comments at Gates of Vienna, and mostly this is a prestige thing (there's rank jealousy of Pamela), but a lot of ugliness over there as well, for example, this comment from DP111:
The EDL is the only grassroots movement in the West that is against the destruction of Western civilisation. It is the only one that has the courage to go out on the streets, even into Muslim areas, and face the hostility and violence of Muslims, Left wing extremists, the police and the media. There is nothing like it in the West. There are now movements in the West that have modelled themselves on the EDL.

The EDL is way above and beyond the likes of single bloggers such as Geller and Spencer, or for that matter any blogs. The EDL does not need to apologise or explain itself - its very being and what it does, is more then enough. The rest is immaterial. It does not need to have an apology from Spencer or Geller, as it is far bigger, stronger, and motivated enough to step on to the real battlefield, rather then merely bemoan the Islamisation of the West - they are real soldiers, who get bloodied and injured, rather then armchair commentators on the passing scene.

My hat off to the EDL. Support it, as your life, and the lives of your descendants, depends on these few.
My scholarly work covered European interwar politics, and reading that reminds me of the Brownshirts of Hitler's Germany. So this guy is calling out Pamela and Robert Spencer for raising questions about EDL affiliations? And as Pamela and Robert are by no means "armchair commentators" it seems that some of the animosity toward them is generated by an irrational hatred in response to challenge. And the commenter insinuates that fighting in the street, fighting with violence, is what it takes to fight the left and Islamization (see the Daily Mail on this). So it's a dispute on tactics as well. And not to read too much into one comment, but it's not a long step from the street thuggery against Muslims to attacks against Jews as part of a global conspiracy. (See this anti-Semitic British National Socialist blog post, for example, and the sidebar graphic there, which says "REMEMBER: PRO-ISRAEL + ANTI-ISLAM = New World Order.)

Anyway, see Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch, "EDL leader: 'We repudiate any individual, group or writing that favors anti-Semitism, neofascism, and any race-based ideology'. "

And Robert Stacy McCain has more on the controversy, "Genesis 12:3." And following the link there takes us to Da Tech Guy, "Not late to Pam’s side this time."

  1. As soon as I aw them piling on Pamela I knew I had to do what I could to support her. I was the first after Jihad Watch to blog in support of Pamela, and Boudica Weblog BPI and a few others soon followed, but mostly, for two days I saw a mob mentality take over against her as more and more blogs signed up against her. It was sad to see and the vitriol in the comments threads of those against her was quite telling. Last night when Pamela and Robert posted about the support they were receiving, it really filled my heart. I am so glad that many have chosen to defend our best advocate against the jihad and islamitization in America. Nobody in this country has worked harder for freedom and human dignity against the horrors of islam than Pamela and Robert. Pamela is OUR Geert Wilders.

  2. While the EDL is a very interesting organization and brings the desruction of culture to the forefront of discussion; I don't completely trust such organizations.

  3. My God, can you read?

While I really have no more time for any of you "counter-jihadists", including both Pam and those over @ GOV.....it is OBVIOUS to anyone who follows what happened that it is PAMELA who is way off base.

I can't believe all the "well Pam is my friend so anything she says or does must be KOSHER" posts by supposedly "intelligent" men.

You embarass yourself with careless post, as does McCain with his. The fact is GOV and the EDL are so touchy about being seen as "anti-semetic" that they police their ranks quite heavily. THAT is the irony of all this, and why Pam's allegations were so reckless, lol.

Anyways, there is obviously no talking to you about facts, for no one who has seen the facts could write what you have here.

  4. Mary, actually, I can see you're not too bright. You might, for example, address the argument here, which is that the commenteres at GOV sound like a bunch of thugs, and you might address the links I've provided as well, which show that EDL is quite much a fascist hooligans' organization. Gonna be hard to keep the anti-Semites out when you parade around like a mob looking for trouble. But I can see you have the knife in for Geller, so no doubt you skip analysis and go straight for the ad hominems. Loser.

  5. lol, I am the "loser" and you call the folks @ GOV "thugs" based on a random comment left on a HUGE thread?
I can tell you know nothing about GOV as they clamp down on anything they percieve as being "anti-semetic"--even when it ISN'T. This is one of the reasons I have little time for them, but is also one of the reasons why you liars calling them and the EDL "antisemtic" is so stupid. Neither one of them are.

You didn't properly investigate the facts of this story, and this post is evidence of your laziness. Your pathetic attempt at a "biting reply" to me is now evidence of your lack of balls to boot, lol.
I don't have any "knives" out for Pam you paranoid nutter. I am pointing out the OBVIOUS to a dim bulb like you : she was wrong. Anyone who reads this drama from the beginning will see that too, well, anyone who is not an asskissing-pleb that is, so I guess you can count yourself OUT of the running, "winner" ;)

  6. "..address the argument here, which is that the commenteres at GOV sound like a bunch of thugs.."
Is that the point of your post? That the commenters at GoV sound like a bunch of thugs, therefore Geller is right and the EDL is a violent, anti-Semitic organisation?

If you bothered to look any further than the Brit lefty press, you'd learn that the thuggery has been directed against the EDL by muslims and the UAF and they've shown great restraint (and excellent discipline) by not retaliating in kind.
In your rush to defend Geller you've demonstrated a lack of knowledge and slandered decent people. At least look a little more deeply into the facts of the matter before rushing to judgement.

I can see I hit a nerve. I call 'em as I see 'em, and no doubt it's pressing your buttons, "Mary."

'In your rush to defend Geller you've demonstrated a lack of knowledge and slandered decent people.'

Don't be an idiot. The GOV comments are full of vile insinuations and allegations, that Robert is screwing Pamela, for example. What is it with you people? You'd think you'd actually want to fight counter jihadists rather than pump yourselves up like school bullies. Losers.

  8. Don't cry Donald. The fact is that Mary is correct. And you are not.

Pamela has made some radical statements about the EDL and has failed to support those statements with any facts.

She was asked to reconsider her statements. She then embarked on an ad hominem campaign against the people who dared to question her statements.

Then she proceeded to reconsider her statements, and promptly changed her mind!

    Hilarious!

  9. There were no ad hominem statements in the open letter to Pamela Geller at all. None. Her statements about the EDL were described as unfortunate and deplorable but there were no statements made about Geller herself. To suggest otherwise is misleading and inaccurate.

However the vitriol in the comments made by Geller at her blog aimed directly at the people who had asked her to reconsider her statements (which Geller then went on to do, LOL ..) was quite telling.

Read the original posts. Who's making radical statements about the EDL? Geller.

Who's standing up for the EDL? GoV.

Who's making ad hominem statements, calling people evil, Machivellian, likening them to Beelzebub, bottom feeders, vultures etc? Geller.

    Who isn't? GoV.

Read Geller's rants. All because someone asked her to reconsider what she said.

    Funny thing is, she did.

Check that you've got a set. Then address my original comments. If you can.

  12. Oh and Don, do remember to take your own advice and deal with the arguments put to you instead of going straight to the ad hominem remarks, because remember: according to you, that would make you a "loser".

And if you can't see how you contradicted yourself in that comment you made, there's no hope for you.

    You're a funny guy Don.

    Well, not really ..

  13. Oh, and Don: your making things up about comments on a thread on another blog, in order to deny what your beloved actually said is a) false and b)illogical.

    Just so you know.

To people who can read & thin for themselves though, it's interesting to see people like you behave in this way. Because you do realise that with every comment you make, you are proving "Mary" right? Don't you?

  15. Read your own words. You condemn yourself as a 'loser' (to use your own term) with every utterance you make.

Try dealing with the facts. If you can.
