Cases in Lieberman Derangement

The Democratic leadership is on the verge of stripping Senator Joseph Lieberman of his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. There's a big uproar on this around the leftosphere today, focusing on Senator Byron Dorgan's interview this morning on Fox News Sunday, where the North Dakota Democrat denounced his Senate colleague.

Mike Lukovich on Lieberman

Next to President Bush and John McCain, Lieberman's probably the most reviled member of the hated BushCo pro-war cabal in Washington.

Check the links for yourself,
here.

I just thought this would be a good time to share
this reaction to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's cartoon of Lieberman above:

Mike Luckovich’s cartoon showing the Democratic donkey with a knife driven into its back by Sen. Joe Lieberman may be the most disgusting and perverse I have seen from his pen... I could remind Luckovich it was Lieberman’s own party (the Democrats) who abandoned him for supporting the war in Iraq and ran a picked rival against him in the primary.

Lieberman “betrayed” them by winning the general election and returning to his Senate seat. Once there, he has caucused and voted with the Democrats and has not transferred his allegiance to the Republican Party (where he would be more than welcome). Apparently, for Luckovich, dissent from the Democratic Party line and holding to one’s principles constitute “a knife in the back.”

Lieberman's situation is one more example of the left's jihad against any and all remants of conservative power in America?

Recall Barack Obama's call for transcending partisanship?
Here's a good opportunity for Democrats to make good on the theme, although I'm not holding my breath.

  1. It should be pointed out that Barack Obama campaigned for Joe Lieberman in his most recent senate race. And how was Obama's support repaid? The cartoon with the knife in the back seems appropriate to me. Obviously, the writers at AJC have never seen a political cartoon before.

  2. DLB: Hmm, are you having a hard time figuring out my post?

The AJC published Luckovich's despicable cartoon. The reaction is from letter-writer Ron Butler.

I notice you don't respond to his comments. The Democrats abandoned the war in Iraq and Lieberman along with it, and that includes Barack Obama.

The Democrats knifed our troops in the back.

Does that register up in your thick skull there.

  3. Senator Lieberman is "conservative" in one area, foreign policy, and really only that one area. He lost his party's senatorial nomination in 2006 over one issue -- the war in Iraq -- and supported his friend John McCain over one issue, the war against the Islamists. Were he to switch to the GOP -- whether by choice or otherwise -- we'd soon be labeling him a RINO.

  4. Dana: I've actually blogged on precisely Lieberman's problem. He's not going to have a home in either party. He know it, of course, and was hoping for a cabinet post in a McCain admin as prelude to retirement from office.

  5. I'm disgusted with how Joe Lieberman's been treated as well. Why should he be punished for voting w/his conscience & standing by a cause he believes in? It's a shame in my opinion. If the Democrats were about bipartisanship at all, they would let one of their onwn voice a differing opinion and not punish him.

  6. So, what does he do? He was re-elected in 2006, so his seat is safe until 2012. I can't see a cabinet position for him in the Obama administration, unless they gave him something like Secretary of Transportation, where the left wouldn't scream too loudly.

Still, at some point, someone has to talk to him; it's not like either side wants to throw away a Senate vote.

  7. Dana: I don't think Lieberman has much of a future in politics after 2012.

  8. DD, sorry I should have said writers to AJC. My bad! I don't see exactly how the Dems knifed the troops in the back since they never cut funding for anything and were actually more conscientious about funding things like body armor and up-armored humvees than Republicans. They funded every appropriations bill and voted for the surge. Is it because they weren't wearing flag pins?

It was also the Democrat, Jim Webb, who pushed for an expanded GI Bill and an end to the onerous 18 month tours favored by a Republican Administration.

Some folks think that keeping the troops in a place where they can get killed or injured is not a good way to support them. It must be my thick skull because I don't understand the logic of that.

Iraq is, was and will be an unnecessary war. That does not diminish the heroism of those who went to fight it. It does diminish the humanity of those of either party who sent them there and were too cowardly to end it.

"Iraq is, was and will be an unnecessary war."

I guess that's the end of it, then. Nothing else to debate. Thanks for visiting.
