President George W. Bush: Farewell Address

Here's the video of President George Bush's farewell address to the nation:

See also the coverage at Memeorandum, including the New York Times', "A Somber Bush Says Farewell to the Nation."

Copies of the text are here and here:

The decades ahead will bring more hard choices for our country, and there are some guiding principles that should shape our course.

While our Nation is safer than it was seven years ago, the gravest threat to our people remains another terrorist attack. Our enemies are patient and determined to strike again. America did nothing to seek or deserve this conflict. But we have been given solemn responsibilities, and we must meet them. We must resist complacency. We must keep our resolve. And we must never let down our guard.

At the same time, we must continue to engage the world with confidence and clear purpose. In the face of threats from abroad, it can be tempting to seek comfort by turning inward. But we must reject isolationism and its companion, protectionism. Retreating behind our borders would only invite danger. In the 21st century, security and prosperity at home depend on the expansion of liberty abroad. If America does not lead the cause of freedom, that cause will not be led.

As we address these challenges – and others we cannot foresee tonight – America must maintain our moral clarity. I have often spoken to you about good and evil. This has made some uncomfortable. But good and evil are present in this world, and between the two there can be no compromise. Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere.

Freeing people from oppression and despair is eternally right. This Nation must continue to speak out for justice and truth. We must always be willing to act in their defense and to advance the cause of peace.

  1. One more quote, that your critics just don't "get" ...

This is the belief that gave birth to our nation. And in the long run, advancing this belief is the only practical way to protect our citizens. When people live in freedom, they do not willingly choose leaders who pursue campaigns of terror. When people have hope in the future, they will not cede their lives to violence and extremism.

This is what peace looks like.

We KNOW what it takes to produce a sustainable peace ...

... and yet many lack confidence in the truth stated above, and refuse to support the direct, timely, resolute, and decisive confrontation of the oppressors in this world by free people ...

... oppressors who, by their active denial of life and liberty, forfeit their legitimacy as governors and therefore have no right to expect the rest of us to respect their sovereignty ...

... oppressors who, if granted that respect, have shown they will continue to leverage it with technology and economic strength to expand their oppression.

What will it take for those who lack confidence in the truth expressed by the President above, to gain that confidence from a basis of fact and reason ... not just wishful thinking of Hope and Change?

  2. Mr. Casebolt

It takes Truth Sir, Truth enables confidence....

If there was no confidence in this Admin.....it is indicative of this admin's use of "Truth".

Discriminate between "talking points that facilitate an agenda"

    and truth

and the Bush/Cheney outcome..and the rational public's response to it

    is logical.

  3. So the American people wanted us to lose in Iraq? Really? They really wanted the democrats to block reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac?
    Really?

    Really?

    Of course not...

We won the illegal war in Iraq in the first two weeks, Sir.

The incompetance that followed had nothing to do with winning or losing......it had to do with competance or incompetance.

Fannie and Freddie Reform blocked by Dems....?

I'm sorry, I dont quite get the connection of an economic outcome for mishandled and unregulated housing policy....to the lack of confidence expressed by a majority in this Administration.

  5. In the end, George W. Bush is the same clueless oaf that sat dumbfounded in the classroom when being told of the 911 attacks. Eight years od failure and people like Richard and the Professor still wonder why I call them deluded right wing fools.

  6. It is the truth, thanks Rich. If America lacked the confidence to definitely move ahead against terrorism, it was not the fault of President Bush. It was the MSM which purposely undermined the moral of the public to further their political goals.

Personally,Bob Dylan said it best for me: "Don't follow leaders, pay your parking meters". In addition, mental pictures of huge crowds hailing Adolph Hitler made me hesitant to be a big fan of any leader.

But to President Bush I warmly say"
"It was an honor having you as my President for eight years"

Faced with armed enemies from without, and political enemies from within you did good Mr. President.
    Thank you.

  7. Bin Laden also thanks Bush for forgetting about him. And if you don't remember Norm, Bush said he didn't care about Bin Laden. 3000 dead from the 911 attacks. 4213 of our Soldiers dead in a war and occupation that should have never been waged. 30,000 plus soldoers permanently wounded fromthe Iraq War and occupation. And the man you're so proud of sais he didn't really care about the asshole that was responsible. And you guys still wonder...

  8. I'm just thankful I don't have to hear him speak again. Never could watch more than five minutes of the State of the Nation speech. Awful public speaker.

I'll be polite and say thanks for serving, but I'm glad to see the back of ya Mr. Bush. (And your cronies.)

It is not so much President Bush that I hate, but his style of government.

  9. I'm sure the Iraqi people feel that life under Saddam Huissen with the torture camps etc...

And last I checked the Iraq war resolution had about 23 different reasons why were going to remove that monster, WMDs was merely one of them...

And we did find 2300 pounds of yellowcake that we brought to the US and I don't mean the Betty Crocker kind either.

But don't let facts get in the way of your fantasy that ends with Bush in handcuffs and the military back in the US arresting Rush Limbaugh

With the line you just presented....

tossing rules of civil engagement legality, and honor, and instead going "John Wayne" gunning for bad guys. Truth be damned?

do you like living in a land that that espouses law and order in good times and vigillantiism in fearful times?

    Is that your line?

The ends justify the means? Is that what youre saying?

Do the ends justify the means, Mr. Vegas Art Guy?

  11. Gunning for the bad guys?

Absolutely. They are by your definition 'bad'. And I do remember the 18 month rush to war. Did Saddam keep or break his end of the cease fire from 1991? Did he not gas 5000 of his own citizens?

    Well?

  12. Mr Vegas Art Guy

The world is chock full of Bad guys, and very bad guys, and very very bad guys.

Part of what makes America Great is...in the face of bad people, we dont blow them away.

Our judiciary is our cornerstone.....not our military

Saddam was and is evil....we in our handling of him did not rise to justice...... but instead, in our fear and weakness fell.....fell to equivalence.

you either get it or you dont, man

and know this, the results we get are irrelevant to the values we betrayed....we are branded with this truth confirmed by our actions.......this is reality.

there are still bad people out there, arent there Mr. Vegas Art Guy?

N Korea, Congo, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Burma....

    Heinous motorscooters doin heinous stuff.

Whats yer stand on it, Sir.

with your line....why are we stoppin at Iraq.....

Why are we stopping with Iraq Sir.
