As Michelle notes, the timing's perfect:
The “report” was one of the most embarrassingly shoddy pieces of propaganda I’d ever read out of DHS. I couldn’t believe it was real.Michelle cites a number of passages from the report, but this one caught my attention when I read it this afternoon:
I spent the day chasing down DHS spokespeople, who have been tied up preparing for a very important homeland security event later today: The First Lady is coming to visit their Washington office. Priorities, you know.
Well, the press office got back to me and verified that the document is indeed for real.
They were very defensive — preemptively so — in asserting that it was not a politicized document and that DHS had done reports on “leftwing extremism” in the past. I have covered DHS for many years and am quite familiar with past assessments they and the FBI have done on animal rights terrorists and environmental terrorists. But those past reports have always been very specific in identifying the exact groups, causes, and targets of domestic terrorism, i.e., the ALF, ELF, and Stop Huntingdon wackos who have engaged in physical harassment, arson, vandalism, and worse against pharmaceutical companies, farms, labs, and university researchers.
By contrast, the piece of crap report issued on April 7 is a sweeping indictment of conservatives. And the intent is clear. As the two spokespeople I talked with on the phone today made clear: They both pinpointed the recent “economic downturn” and the “general state of the economy” for stoking “rightwing extremism.” One of the spokespeople said he was told that the report has been in the works for a year. My b.s. detector went off the chart, and yours will, too, if you read through the entire report — which asserts with no evidence that an unquantified “resurgence in rightwing extremist recruitment and radicalizations activity” is due to home foreclosures, job losses, and…the historical presidential election.
In Obama land, there are no coincidences. It is no coincidence that this report echoes Tea Party-bashing left-wing blogs (check this one out comparing the Tea Party movement to the Weather Underground!) and demonizes the very Americans who will be protesting in the thousands on Wednesday for the nationwide Tax Day Tea Party.
Historically, domestic rightwing extremists have feared, predicted, and anticipated a cataclysmic economic collapse in the United States. Prominent antigovernment conspiracy theorists have incorporated aspects of an impending economic collapse to intensify fear and paranoia among like-minded individuals and to attract recruits during times of economic uncertainty. Conspiracy theories involving declarations of martial law, impending civil strife or racial conflict, suspension of the U.S. Constitution, and the creation of citizen detention camps often incorporate aspects of a failed economy. Antigovernment conspiracy theories and “end times” prophecies could motivate extremist individuals and groups to stockpile food, ammunition, and weapons. These teachings also have been linked with the radicalization of domestic extremist individuals and groups in the past, such as violent Christian Identity organizations and extremist members of the militia movement.I was in graduate school, in the 1990s, when we had the big worries over right-wing militias following the Oklahoma City Bombing. The threats were obviously real. I read a number of articles on this, as well as James Coates', Armed and Dangerous: The Rise of the Survivalist Right.
This administration must be supremely spooked to have DHS cook up something like this cockamamie report. I know militias, and I know right wing extremist ideologies. And I can tell you, the Tea Party movement is no fringe groundswell. In fact, I have a feeling this report could cause major political damage to the White House, so expect to see some damage control in the next few days, particularly as we see Wednesday's massive citizens' anti-tax demonstrations sweep the nation. Leftists will continue to paint everyday Americans as fascist extremists. If the administration does so as well it will only be courting even greater grassroots mobilization.
Yeah, I saw this one too. Like I say on my site, battle lines are being drawn. By the government. They are setting down their defenses for what is coming. They are trying to show that they will have no choice but to use military or quasi-military force (also read as civilian security force) to put down "domestic terrorists". Yep, that would be you and me.
ReplyDeleteBoo Hoo!
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to be a conservative these days. The big mean libhruls keep picking on us.
Boo Hoo!
Nowhere in those excerpts or in any other I have read mention the tea party. Could you please point out where the report mentions the tea party?
ReplyDeleteOtherwise your statement that "I can tell you, the Tea Party movement is no fringe groundswell." has no bearing on the report.
Jimmy_D it doesn't have to mention the tea party explicitly. The tea party is lumped in with the right wing activities that supposedly make us "dangerous". This is an outright attack on our rights. Wether they like it or not we have a right to not agree.
ReplyDeletewww.strongerthandeath.net
indeed the feds have turned their sights on domestic political threats in the past. and no, they weren't always "very specific in identifying the exact groups, causes, and targets." there was this report, which wasn't exactly a 'sweeping indictment' of leftists, as they were lumped in with your garden variety foreign jihadi extremists, but the report cites a threat, not from a specific group or cause, but arising from anti-us and and anti-globalization sentiment... on teh internets!!!11! (extended quotation below.) and the DOD itself has fretted over the domestic terrorist threat from anti-war protesters.
ReplyDeletewe are all the enemy who don't agree with uncle.
Anti-US and anti-globalization sentiment is on the rise and fueling other radical ideologies. This could prompt some leftist, nationalist, or separatist groups to adopt terrorist methods to attack US interests. The radicalization process is occurring more quickly, more widely, and more anonymously in the Internet age, raising the likelihood of surprise attacks by unknown groups whose members and supporters may be difficult to pinpoint.
• We judge that groups of all stripes will increasingly use the Internet to communicate, propagandize, recruit, train, and obtain logistical and financial support.
We The People are EVERYWHERE, we are called Citizens of The United States
ReplyDelete"This administration must be supremely spooked to have DHS cook up something like this cockamamie report. I know militias, and I know right wing extremist ideologies. And I can tell you, the Tea Party movement is no fringe groundswell."
ReplyDeleteHoly non-sequitur, Batman!
Jimmy_D it doesn't have to mention the tea party explicitly.Right, because you guys can read between the lines and let your paranoid fantasies run wild, which is basically what the report is warning against.
ReplyDeleteGun and ammo sales are through the roof. It's for a reason, Obama means to put down any resistance to his socialist policies however extreme.
ReplyDeleteLabeling Americans who are only concerned with freedom speaks volumes as to the Administration's intent.
Wow a two for two leftist definition of the following:
ReplyDeleteThe Dismisser — The ultimate arrogant commenter, this person never actually engages with the topic, but merely declares it beneath anyone’s interest, already resolved, or improperly stated — and thus hardly worth the bother. The dismisser’s only real message is: I’m smarter than you and you need to acknowledge that fact.
and
The Skimmer — The commenter, usually sour, who reads only a headline or sentence of a piece, draws exactly the wrong conclusion, and then embarks on an embarrassing rant.
Way to go Deranged and Anonymous. Nether smarter than or on point. Anonymous has to hide and Deranged just embarrasses himself.
Since everyone is missing the point here, allow me...
ReplyDeleteThe point being, when Bush ignored vague intelligence, it caused us a world of hurt.
Choosing ignorance was the purview of the Bush admin. We don't want to go down that road again.
Once again, Malkin has shown what a complete buffoon she is.
"Better be despised for too anxious apprehensions, than ruined by too confident security."
ReplyDeleteName the quote anyone...?
"I know militias, and I know right wing extremist ideologies."
ReplyDeleteOh, now you've done it.
If you're a paranoid, stay on the line. We know where you are."

Can you say----leak! Ha, so much for Homeland Security!
I can't count the number of times they used the term "Rightwing extremists" in this piece of garbage report. Many of the more militant leaning Americans are not right wing at all. What a biased piece of shit this thing is! It is just one more attempt to rationalize gun controls and bucking ofama's personal militia.
ReplyDeleteThis is consistent with Socialist ideology. It's done in Cuba, Venezuela, China, N Korea, Iran, and Russia--to name a few.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone surprised that a Socialist government in America would be any different?
Are they concerned with Leftwing Extremism, i.e., Reverend Wright, William Ayers and others?
I'm not that much of a conservative, but this , as well as any attack on free speech, bothers me greatly.
Simple fact is, y'all have a bad record. Don't sweat it. Someone is probably watching you right now. All in the interests of security. You didn't have a problem with wiretaps, why now?
ReplyDeleteAmericaneocon,
ReplyDeleteThis is simply too much. If it wasn't so tragic, it'd be hilarious.
When we paleoconservatives sounded the alarm after the Neocons attacked the Bill of Rights in the name of the "unitary Executive" (translation: obey the President, or else), you and your pro-war, any war crowd dismissed us as "unpatriotic."
Did you notice it's the Southern Poverty Law Center behind this report attacking conservatives? Yes, the same SPLC you cited against us because we knew that Big Government is a greater threat to liberty than a bunch of murderous madmen hunched in a cave.
If you've forgotten, check it out:

Now that a bunch of openly socialist lefties are using Bush-Cheney's powers, you're worried about your rights. We kept warning you not to play with matches, and now you're whining about the house being on fire.
Good job, Doug.
Funny thing:
ReplyDeleteLiberal's never argue with facts. They either call others names, blame someone else (like the former President), or just ignore the topic completely and rant about something not in touch with the subject.
Funny thing is that the last half of Bush's term, there was a democratic house. No wonder things started going down hill.
I fail to see any relationship to national security and some of the move of this administration. In fact, this administration is doing "more watching" than Bush, and is in attack mode on certain so-called conservative.
ReplyDeleteFor the President of the United States to engage in an an hominem attack on a talk radio show host, irregardless of the political bent, is unpresidential. I've been around for a while, and consider this an extremely negative step in the wrong direction as far as political freedom is concerned.
This Homeland Security report deserves our contempt. For them to imply returning veterans are potential terrorists is just sick. Truth is returning veterans - and the rest of us - have a lot to be genuinely concerned and pissed off about.
ReplyDeleteHow about Homeland Security and the Obama regime and Nancy Pelosi and all the liberals who think they're better than the Constitution, the other laws of the land, and the rest of us Americans. Screw them all I hope they worry themselves sick about us.
This administration must be supremely spooked to have DHS cook up something like this cockamamie report.I don't think the White House is spooked in the least over this, as this is what the far left, including Obama, truly thinks of us conservatives.
ReplyDeleteWe have finally reached the point where those of us who support the principles this nation was founded upon are now considered "extremists" and potential terrorists by our own government.
This report is eerily similar to one handed out to Missouri law enforcement officials a while back.
I wonder if this, too, was penned by the far-left, racist Southern Poverty Law Center like the one in Missouri.
I expect once this gets out, firearm sales will hit new records.
-Dave
In reading some of the lefty comments on this thread, I bet when the day comes that the conservatives who failed to arm themselves are being marched of to the camps by Obama's green shirts, these guys will be telling them that they are just being paranoid.
ReplyDelete-Dave
Glenn Greenwald nails this and everyone's overly pathetic arguments here:
ReplyDelete"As the National Review/Bush-following-Right has been telling us for years now, there's nothing to worry about if you've done nothing wrong and have nothing to hide."
"This is all as laughable as it is predictable. Just a couple months out of power and they have suddenly re-discovered their fear of the Federal Government and their belief in the need to limit its powers."
I think diaper sales will skyrocket, along with gun sales.
This is a great post, Donald! Just when you think that the Obama administration can not sink any lower, well here we are! And you are so right that all this does is make people more willing to become part of a real, PEACEFUL movement. Not a bunch a easily led loons. That is the purvue of he left. You get a full-metal wrap around link on this one!
ReplyDeleteNo time or resources to fix the economy, illegal immigration, punish bankers and CEOs, or take on North Korea or Iran...but plenty to write pointless reports vilifying the voice of unhappiness?
ReplyDeleteIt's political psy-ops 101. Create the framework, control the conversation and prepare the way for laws that will destroy rights and liberties. Machiavellian in every way.
That's why it will be important for any emerging voice of dissent to seize the initiative, shape the conversation and address that issue. If the time comes when We the People need to stand up to our government (which is doing what Fascists, Nazis, Communists, Socialists, and every despot and tyrant have done), it needs to be with readily identifiable uniforms and according to the law of land warfare.
Come Halloween, everyone should put on a black costume, head to toe. A single, large Albatross wing should protrude from the right shoulder...just one wing. On the front of your costume, it should say "Vast Right Wing" and you should have a tea-bag hanging around your neck. A picture of Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama on each of your butt cheeks couldn't hurt, either.
You just have to ask ... which is more extreme? Carrying a Bible or bankrupting generations with political spending?
ReplyDeleteAnd re: Bush v. Obama on civil liberties:
Under Bush, "extremist" was always defined as those associated with the lifting of heads, detached from the dead.
Now we see that under the New Boss, the definition has been broadened to those associated with the lifting of hands, still attached to the living doing the lifting.
Should we now refer to the DHS Secretary as Janet the Second?
And I see an emerging market for T-shirts with the DHS logo, bracketed by the words "Official Extremist".
Sorry Rich. I have two words for you:
ReplyDeleteTimothy McVeigh
As I've always said, Republicans have little or no memory. Must be all that LSD they took in the 60s.
I don't consider myself a republican or a democrat. But after reading these comments, it's very interesting to see that people either name call, bring up a very isolated incident, or intelligently agree.
ReplyDeleteIf you have some intelligent reason to disagree with the opinion of the article, go ahead and state it. But comments like
"Boo Hoo!
It's so hard to be a conservative these days. The big mean libhruls keep picking on us.
Boo Hoo!"
just prove that the ignorance of the general population of this country is the reason the government has so much control.
While you're at it, learn about the fucking Constitution. Think about your own security rather than the "national security." Maybe "national security" isn't for your benefit.
I'm truly ashamed at where this country has gone in the past few years.
And Tim, I guarantee most of the people commenting had problems with the wiretaps.
ReplyDeleteI am one of those radical, right wing extremists who, while at the Tea Party of over fifteen thousand people, noted the communications were blocked and delayed on cell phones.
ReplyDeleteI am not afraid of the government or retaliation for standing up and stating what I believe--I am angry at them for trying to intimidate us...angry as hell.
There is nothing they can do to us for exercising our First Amendment Rights of Free Speech.
The worst that could happen is they will send a couple of young FBI agents to our doors, who will have to sit on our sofas and listen to us complain about the economy, taxes, the illegal aliens being released in our country, government spending and other political matters.
And it will tick them off because they will want to go chase REAL criminals rather than spend hours listening to everyday people complaining about government.
There is no room in federal facilities to house extremist right wing radicals like us...nor is there any room in the courts to facilitate us. There is no citation violation...nope, all they can do is send their agents out to talk to us to determine if we are threats.
They are just abusing their authority by trying to intimidate us...
Napolitano needs to step down.
I hate this guy does he even know what hes doing. because of him i no longer have a job. I have to keep going through job listings just to find something. and its getting hard for ex military to get jobs that are not on commition
ReplyDeleteOh great, if this is real, then the Department of Homeland Security should be renamed the Department of Homeland Paranoia. By making such a broad profile and such associations as are done in this report, it will increase the amount of disdain for the government if they do utilize such a crappy report to base actions upon.
ReplyDelete
