As a former radical Leftist, I know that this kind of ‘Progressive’ rhetoric is a facade designed to mask their true beliefs. They support building this mosque because it represents a slap in the face to Right-wing opponents of this project and would also be a blow against “Pig AmeriKKKa”More at the link.

The former Leftist brings up an interesting point. Have you noticed that Conservatives et al rarely wish their opponents death whereas death threats, making jokes about the death of those who disagree with them, et al is very common for leftists?
One of the reasons is what one sees here, a Leftist who is moving away from Leftism. A large number of us who would be considered now as Conservatives, neo-conservatives, et al have experienced Leftist ideas when we were younger. Most of us matured and grew both intellectually and in experience as to the real ramifications of these ideas. It is why we are so adamantly against leftism.
Because we have grown we know that many of those who espouse those ideas will move away as they mature and gain more experience in life. Our job is to keep them in check long enough for that maturity to take place and to limit the damage they create.
