Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Maschek, Iraq War Hero, Heckled at Columbia Over ROTC

I got the heads up on this first from Dana at CSPT, "The students at Columbia University have an absolute right to express their opinions ... and so do I: some of them are worth less than the remnants of dinner I flushed down the toilet this morning."

Dana's reporting on this from New York Post, "
Hero's unwelcome: Wounded Iraq vet jeered at Columbia
Columbia University students heckled a war hero during a town-hall meeting on whether ROTC should be allowed back on campus.

"Racist!" some students yelled at Anthony Maschek, a Columbia freshman and former Army staff sergeant awarded the Purple Heart after being shot 11 times in a firefight in northern Iraq in February 2008. Others hissed and booed the veteran.

Maschek, 28, had bravely stepped up to the mike Tuesday at the meeting to issue an impassioned challenge to fellow students on their perceptions of the military.

"It doesn't matter how you feel about the war. It doesn't matter how you feel about fighting," said Maschek. "There are bad men out there plotting to kill you."
I'm speechless, really. I don't know --- and I can't identify with --- some of my fellow Americans anymore.

  1. Way to go Columbia students. Once again you prove how ignorant you are by disrespecting this vet. Free speech isn't free, to bad you don't understand it. He's 100% right in what he said. Unfortunately I'm sure none of you have ever served in the military, but are enjoying the benefits of freedom.

  2. Shows how ignorant our country has become. A Solider that defended our country and still defends the right to free speech after this disqusting display of ignorance. The women in the audiance that laughed will be the first to whine when we need to protect our own shores from the hate of the middle east. It is appalling what has happened to this country. When American's give dictators more respect then our defenders of freedom. A wounded man that lost a leg for our freedoms. Make fun of our military for your political gain. The beliefs of the left is very slanted. They better pay attention..

  3. I totally believe we should send the Columbia University Student Body and STAFF to Iran, Syria, and Yemen with cans of Vienna Sausage to pass out to the citizens of those sovereign countries.

I return they can expect black hoods and machetes,

As a side this would help solve the problem of the ever increasing cost of tuition in New York.

  4. I knew it would be just a matter of time before the children of privilige would be back to doing to these Vets, what they did to me and my Brothers when we returned home from Vietnam. In my case it was bags of dog feces lite with fire and thrown at us after getting off the plane at Travis AFB.
Now it's happening again. All of that garbage abouth loving the warrior but hating the war that they used to say was as false as the welcome home I got in 1969.
I bet the women in the crowd think that the "freedom fighters" in those countries our brave men and women in uniform are fighting in will treat them like their college professors. Having once lived in a Muslim nation in the early 70's I agree with the post from Barry Arnott. Only we don't waste taxpayer dollars to attempt to rescue them when they find out that in most Middle Eastern and third world countries women are just breeding machines. These people never change, they are being taught by the ones who threw bags at us and it shows.
