In the Mail: What the (Bleep) Just Happened?: The Happy Warrior's Guide to the Great American Comeback

The public relations folks at HarperCollins sent me a copy of Monica Crowley's new book, What the (Bleep) Just Happened?: The Happy Warrior's Guide to the Great American Comeback.

Monica Crowley
I'm in the middle of the first chapter right now and thoroughly enjoying it.  I wish I could block quote some of Crowley's discussion of Barack Obama. It's some of most incisive comments on this man, distilling years' worth of frustration with his candidacy and presidency. I'll see what I can do later to post some longer excerpts, in addition to a more complete review.

Meanwhile, Jamie Glazov has an interview at FrontPage Magazine, "What the (Bleep) Just Happened?: The Happy Warrior’s Guide to the Great American Comeback":
FP: Monica Crowley, welcome to Frontpage Interview. It is an honor and privilege to speak with you.

Crowley: Thanks for having me, Jamie.  It’s an honor for me to join you.  You guys do heroic work.

FP: Let’s begin with what inspired you to write this book and what it is about.

Crowley: I wrote this book for several reasons.  First, I surveyed all of the destruction and despair wrought by Team Obama and their fellow leftists and thought, “Are we supposed to just to accept this??  Just accept radically redistributionist economic policies, unprecedented spending, record-breaking deficits and debt, non-existent economic growth, socialized medicine, and American decline abroad?  Just lie back and take it?  Oh hell, no!”  I wrote this book to reinforce the notion that America CAN be saved from this assault—-and that she is WORTH SAVING. Obama may be doing his best to turn America the Exceptional into America the Also-Ran, but he didn’t count on us running a great defense.

Second, I wrote it because if you have only listened to the mainstream media, you have only received a small—and very distorted—part of the Obama-era picture.  I put together the entire Obama domestic policy record with the entire foreign policy record—and when you see all of the evidence amassed in one place, it’s devastating.  Part of the power of the book is seeing the sheer volume of leftist madness to which he’s subjected us.  Never before have we had a president so hellbent on redistributing ALL of our greatness, not just here at home, but abroad. I wanted to shine a light not just on the policies he’s implemented but on the very sophisticated leftist psychology he and his team have used to get it done.

I also made the book really funny, because in the age of Obama, if we don’t laugh, we cry, and there’s no crying in a book by Monica Crowley.

And finally and most importantly, I wanted to create a new template for America in the 21st century.  Obama did it from the left in 2008, and now it’s our turn.  I developed the concept of the Happy Warrior as a rallying cry for those of us who want to restore America to its great foundational principles: individual freedom, personal responsibility, fiscal restraint, and economic liberty.  President Reagan was the quintessential Happy Warrior, and no one loves, respects, and admires Reagan more than I do.  But Reagan served 30 years ago.  If we’re going to have any hope of getting America back on the rails, we’ve got to take his positive embrace of conservatism and bring it into the 21st century.  Like Reagan, we know we’re in a war for the future of America.  And like Reagan, we join the battle joyfully and with the full confidence that we can win the battle of ideas and bring America back.

This book is the fun, spirited, optimistic battle cry of the new Happy Warrior!

FP:  Tell us about that title!  How did you come up with it—-and what does the “Bleep” really stand for?

Crowley: I was going to call it Fifty Shades of Obama but then thought better of it.

One day last summer, I was having dinner with a good friend.  I told her that I wanted to write another book but wasn’t quite sure as to what its focus should be.  We then started talking about how epically weird the last few years under Obama have been.  Every day, we were getting hit with a new piece of insane leftist social engineering or some new policy to take down American power or prestige abroad—a rapid-fire assault I call “Barack-a-mole.”  Our enemies were getting olive branches, our allies were getting dissed, and millions of Americans were being moved into government dependency at home.  “What the (bleep) just happened?” I sighed.  She looked at me and said, “That’s your title.”  And so it came to be.  Of course, I used an actual unprintable word.  I thought I’d let each reader supply his or her own favorite profanity.

FP: Expand for us on the disasters that have occurred under Obama in your view—and why he has behaved as he has.

Crowley: Obama doesn’t run around wearing a Carrie Bradshaw-esque nameplate necklace that says, “Socialist.”  But his policies, actions, words, background, and associations speak louder than any ID necklace ever could.  As a technical matter, economic fascism (government control of the means of production without ownership) more accurately describes what Obama is carrying out than socialism (government ownership of those means of production), but “fascism” and “socialism” are highly charged words—and arguments over the labels often obfuscate the reality of the policies.  Obama has engaged in extreme government-directed redistributionism to undermine the free market, generate widespread dependency, and further centralize state power.

In the end, the term matters less than his policies and their effects.  This is a man who spent his formative years learning at the knees of assorted communists, from his mother and father to Frank Marshall Davis to the Marxist professors and sundry socialists he admitted he sought out while in school to the self-avowed Communists (Van Jones, “green jobs” czar), Mao admirers (Anita Dunn, communications director) and radical redistributionists (Cass Sunstein, regulatory czar) he appointed as president.  He spent a good deal of time mastering the art of Saul Alinsky’s tactics for advancing the socialist revolution.  In 2007, he said of his years learning Alinsky’s methods, “It was that education that was seared into my brain.  It was the best education I ever had, better than anything I got at Harvard Law School.”  Indeed.

FP:  You say he then made it to the big stage and governed strictly according to that redistributionist ideology in which he was so steeped.

Crowley: Without a doubt.  Obama never made a mystery of who he was or what he believed.  He employed those revolutionary tactics as a Chicago community organizer and then moved on to pull more formal levers of power.  Once he seized the brass ring in 2008, it was “Katie, bar the door.”  He immediately put the redistributionism of Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson on steroids: he spent trillions of dollars—particularly on “stimulus” and other spending projects which stimulated nothing but government, added an unprecedented $5 trillion to the national debt, and engaged in massive social engineering in every major part of the U.S. economy (the financial sector, the industrial base, the energy sector, and health care).

He moved to divide Americans based on class, race, and gender; after all, if Americans are pitted against each other, they are too distracted to focus on what he’s doing.  He has deliberately and quickly moved the United States toward a European-style social democratic state, despite the fact that those nations are currently imploding from decades of socialist redistributionism.  Obama’s intent is to expand government dependency in order to ultimately create a permanent Democrat voting majority.  Any other American president would’ve been flipping his lid over the kind of chronically high unemployment we’ve suffered.  Not Obama.  The more folks unemployed, the more dependency being created.  And if this were allowed to go on, supported by the redistributionist agenda, America would be truly altered.  (This is, by the way, what he meant when he spoke about “change.”)
But the book here. It's great!

Barack Obama's Lawless Presidency

At IBD, "Obama's Lawless Presidency Close to Totalitarianism" (via Memeorandum):

Forward 2012
The Obama Record: The chief executive who swore to faithfully execute the nation's laws picks those he'll ignore and makes up others through regulation and executive order. He sees no need for a Congress or Constitution.

Maybe it's because Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts stumbled a bit in leading President Obama through the oath of office that the president doesn't feel bound by it.

But through the awkwardness these words were heard: "I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

It would not take Obama long to make clear he meant his interpretation of the Constitution, not the Supreme Court's, a principle established in Marbury v. Madison, the 1802 case that formed the basis for the exercise of judicial review in the U.S. under Article III of the Constitution.

In his State of the Union address a year later on Jan. 27, 2010, he shamefully scolded the justices on national television for "having reversed a century of law" in the Citizens United ruling in which the court was protecting the freedom of political speech enshrined more than two centuries ago in the First Amendment. We agree with Justice Samuel Alito's eloquent rebuff of the president, in which he was seen mouthing the words "Not true."

Then came ObamaCare...

Ann Romney Praises Michelle Obama: 'I Think She's Lovely'

Mrs. Romney's very gracious herself.

At London's Daily Mail, "'I think she's lovely': Ann Romney praises Michelle Obama for her grace under pressure":
Ann Romney, the wife of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has offered unexpected praise for Michelle Obama, saying that the first lady is 'lovely' and speaking positively of the way she has been handling her responsibilities.

In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Mrs Romney said that first lady's role – one that she hopes to assume if her husband wins the 2012 election – ‘is a very difficult position to be in,’ one in which the husband faces ‘enormous scrutiny all the time.’

Mrs Romney praised the first lady for keeping her calm and having ‘composure.’

American Exceptionalism

Just imagine if Newt Gingrich won the nomination and defeated Barack Obama in the fall. We'd have as the new first lady Callista Gingrich, who is so unabashedly patriotic as to put Michelle 'For the First Time I'm Proud of My Country' Obama in the shade a thousand times over.

Michelle 'Big Butt' Obama: Spending is 'Spiraling Out of Control'?

That's not very nice that Rep. Sensenbrenner slammed the First Lady for a fat posterior, but he's recanting now: "Sensenbrenner apologizes to first lady over "big butt" remark."

iOWNTHEWORLD had the initial report, "Rep. Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin Tells it Like it Is – Michelle’s Got a Fat Ass."

And London's Daily Mail has a dishy update on the Obamas vacation planning fiasco, "Is Michelle Obama's spending 'spiralling out of control'? First Lady 'insisted on $4m trip to Hawaii when her husband wanted local vacation'."

The Number of Squatters Nationwide is Rising

These are just people without homes. Not to be confused with the Obama-endorsed Occupy freaks expropriating property for the revolution.

At Los Angeles Times, "Squatters say foreclosed homes beat homeless shelters":
Slips of paper are pasted to the broken door of the corner row house, violations for the garbage piled near the front steps. The stench of trash wafts up the dark interior stairway, where an ashtray filled with cigarette butts sits like an abandoned potted plant on the second-floor landing.

Nobody lives here, at least not officially.

But as you climb the narrow stairs to the top floor, a door opens into an airy apartment that is home to Tasha Glasgow, who is part of a largely invisible population of squatters occupying vacant homes across America. Given their clandestine lives, it's impossible to say how many people are squatting in this country, but with more than 1.3 million homes in foreclosure and hundreds of thousands of people homeless, advocates say it's safe to assume the number is growing.

"You have these abandoned dwellings that are sitting there vacant, sometimes for many months," said Patrick Markee of the Coalition for the Homeless in New York, where shelters are reporting record numbers of residents. "It's not an issue of whether squatting is right or wrong. The fact is that people are desperate for places to live, and they're going to do what they need to do."
RTWT.

Thank the Obama-Dems for the Depression-like conditions in this country. Squatting is illegal, but the administration doesn't give a Flying V one way or the other. For example, "Taxpayers Will Pay for President’s Hawaiian Vacation Whether He Goes or Not."

Tareq Salahi Files for Divorce From Wife Michaele

Not only are the Salahis getting divorced, but Tareq's banned from Journey concerts. Man, talk about insult to injury. That's harsh: "TAREQ SALAHI - BANNED from Journey Concerts."

I blogged the party crashing story in 2009, and was picked up at WND, "White House 'gatecrashers' tied to terror sympathizer."

Happy Labor Day to Opus #6!

That's my friend Opus #6 of MAinfo. We met at the Michele Bachmann rally at Knotts Berry Farm in early 2009. Opus left a wonderful comment at the blog yesterday, at my essay, "Housing Downsizing!":

This housing downsizing post has to be my favorite American Power post of all time. Probably because I downsized in June. And the kids and I, though a little cramped in our 3-br rented condo, are enjoying the community pool with lots of friends to play with, way less stress worrying about bills and repairs, and extra money in the checking account. I also loved seeing your mom. You and I are in the same generation and our parents are on the same track. She looks lovely. And a sweet nurturing woman is a blessing to any family.

I pray that you and your family enjoy the new digs. That you have many happy days in your new place, lots less stress and building character as your kids observe you handing the changing nature of our society and economy not with bitterness but with courage.
I responded at the post.

It means a lot. I've met many wonderful people through blogging. We share our lives online and we meet in person as well. Have a great Labor Day, Opus!

Change! Share of Americans Working Near 30-Year Low

At USA Today, "More Americans Leaving Workforce":
The share of the population that is working fell to its lowest level last year since women started entering the workforce in large numbers three decades ago, a USA TODAY analysis finds.

Only 45.4% of Americans had jobs in 2010, the lowest rate since 1983 and down from a peak of 49.3% in 2000. Last year, just 66.8% of men had jobs, the lowest on record.

The bad economy, an aging population and a plateau in women working are contributing to changes that pose serious challenges for financing the nation’s social programs.

This administration has no clue.

Islamic Gunman Screamed 'Allah Akbar' Before Opening Fire on U.S. Troops in Frankfurt

Previously, "U.S. Troops Murdered by Kosovar Muslim at Frankfurt Airport."

And at ABC News, "
Gunman Shouting 'Allah Akbar' Kills 2 US Airmen in Germany: Obama Says U.S. Will Spare No Efforts in Investigating Killings" (via Memeorandum):

Yeah, Obama's gonna spare no efforts. Okay, well that's better than not speaking out at risk of doing "a great disservice to my people," although he's bent over backwards to appease Islamists in every single attack before this. And speaking of doing a "
great disservice," hey, no doubt the New Black Panthers are breathing easy that the administration's "spared no efforts" in investigating that despicable case of thuggery and voter intimidation.

More at Hot Air, "
Breaking: Attack on soldiers in Frankfurt bus, 2 dead; Update: Air Force, not Army, gunman identified; Update: Two airmen confirmed killed, two more wounded; Update: “Allahu akbar!”"

And especially Atlas Shrugs, "Details Emerge on Jihadi Arif Uka Who Opened Fire on U.S. Airmen Just Arriving From America."

Michelle Rhee Resigns as Chancellor of D.C. Schools

The main story is at Washington Post. She's too hot politically, but she's got what it takes to shake up the union stranglehold on education:

Michelle Rhee

Rhee's goals - higher student achievement, better teachers and greater accountability for their classroom performance - were generally shared by her predecessors. But with new powers putting the struggling school system under mayoral control, Rhee pursued the goals with an unprecedented zeal.

She closed more than two dozen schools, fired teachers by the hundreds and spent more than two years negotiating a labor contract that gives principals new control over teacher hiring while establishing a new performance-pay system that ties compensation to growth in student test scores.

Rhee also dramatically expanded the number of spaces in preschool, pre-K and Head Start, and opened the Early Stages diagnostic center to help flag learning disabilities in children ages 2 to 5. She piloted a program of "wrap-around" support services for at-risk middle school kids and launched a program of "themed" schools focusing on science and technology, world cultures and the arts.
I'll have more on education issues in upcoming days. But Sweetness & Light adds this on Rhee's departure:
But do note that we have had complete silence about Ms. Rhee from Mr. and Mrs. Obama. Both of whom constantly pretend to be concerned about education, despite doing everything in their powers to undercut any and all teacher reforms. (Such as doing away with vouchers in the District’s system.)

Of course, in actual truth, the Obamas are only interested in funneling more money to their foot soldiers in the teachers unions.

And never mind that they send their own children to the non-union Sidwell Friends school, just like good Washington Democrats always do.

Obama Job Approval Continues Violent Slide to Debacle

At Gallup, "Obama Job Approval Rating Down to 38% Among Independents" (via Memeorandum):

Just Stop It

Thirty-eight percent of independents approve of the job Barack Obama is doing as president, the first time independent approval of Obama has dropped below 40% in a Gallup Daily tracking weekly aggregate. Meanwhile, Obama maintains the support of 81% of Democrats, and his job approval among Republicans remains low, at 12% ....

Overall, 46% of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing as president in the June 28-July 4 aggregate, one point above his lowest weekly average. Obama's average weekly job approval rating has not been above 50% since Feb. 8-14, though it reached the 50% mark as recently as May 3-9.

Obama's lower ratings come amid a still-struggling economy, the ongoing difficulties presented by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and the recent change of command in the war in Afghanistan. Underscoring the challenge at hand, Obama's 44% approval rating in July 2-5 polling (Gallup did not interview July 4) ties his lowest three-day average to date.
