Years of political tumult and low public trust leave many in the U.S. questioning official version of events. 

Three days after Donald Trump survived an attack on his life, federal officials had already deemed it an act of domestic terrorism, and were investigating how Secret Service protocols failed so tragically. They said the 20-year-old man, Thomas Matthew Crooks, acted alone.

Whether or not Americans believe them is another matter.

A torrent of conspiracy theories was unleashed in the moments after the attempt on former president Trump’s life during a Saturday-afternoon rally in Butler, Pa. It has hardly abated since. 

 Anti-Trump voices falsely accused him of staging the entire episode, arguing the arresting and heroic images of the bloodied former president raising a defiant fist were just too good to be true. On the right, others pushed baseless theories that the “deep state” either planned or purposely left Trump vulnerable to attack and argued that rhetoric from Democrats set the assault in motion. 

 The notions have taken hold on social media, on group-text chats and in casual conversations around the country, with elected officials and political figures on both sides joining the fray...

FBI analyzed Thomas Matthew Crooks’s phone and found nothing to explain why he tried to assassinate former president.

BETHEL PARK, Pa.—Two days after Thomas Matthew Crooks committed one of the most shocking acts of political violence in half a century, both investigators and people in his western Pennsylvania community are no closer to understanding why he did it.

The FBI has analyzed Crooks’s cellphone and has found nothing that explains why he climbed onto a roof and shot at former President Trump, grazing his ear, law-enforcement officials said. Crooks’s parents have spoken to law enforcement, but they also seemed to have little insight, telling authorities he didn’t appear to have any strong political leanings and had few, if any, friends.

The attempted assassination looked likely to drive the country to new levels of partisan distrust, but the initial mixed picture of the bespectacled young gunman of a quiet loner who wasn’t politically outspoken has instead left most of the American public scratching its head...
