Obama Must Recognize Evil

Publisher's Note: My friend, Norman Gersman of New York, has accepted my invitation to write a guest essay. It is my honor to publish it here:

*****

My wife and I enjoyed a dinner with another couple about two weeks before the election. We had all agreed before hand that when we discussed politics it would be kept civil with no name calling so we could stay friends. They are Obama supporters, Israel supporters, and active in their synagogue. When the issue of Obama and Israel came up I was assured over and over again that Obama would support Israel. Israel has nothing to worry about. The fact that Obama hung for many years with people who looked forward to a Palestinian victory was of no importance. “Don’t worry” I was told.

I had a telephone conversation just a few days ago with one member of this same couple and was told that they think Israel could have began Operation Lead Cast now, before the end of current President’s term of office, because Israel is not sure of Obama’s support. I asked: “you told me that Obama will support Israel, so why should Israel worry?” The response was: “we think Obama will support Israel, but we are really not sure what he will do or say.” I ended the conversation quickly before I could say something regrettable. They think, do they ... so flippant when millions of lives are at stake. My anger has not subsided.

So now our President-Elect has returned from his vacation in Hawaii to the cold gray skies of Washington D.C. He must realize that a huge chunk of the American electorate is waiting to find out where he will take American foreign policy in the Middle East, but Obama fails to say a word. He says that we have only one President at a time and therefore it is not appropriate for him to say anything until he is President. Yeah, right. His failure to speak on this issue is a loud and clear statement in itself. This is a clueless man, who now having won the Presidency only has a tiger by its tail.

I look forward to how Obama deals with an organization like Hamas and its leaders. I don’t think he realizes that the leaders of Hamas are not rational people like most of us. Negotiations and truces are instruments to be used only to further their aim of Israel’s destruction. “There is no solution for the Palestinian people except Jihad” states the covenant that created Hamas. This is a bloodthirsty organization that rules over its own people by intimidation, death and the barrel of a gun. I think that Obama will fail to recognize their evil, or the evil of radical Islam to the western world.

Israel will not fall if the Obama administration fails to support her. My only fear is that Israel will lose its humanity if forced to stand alone with no allies. When a catastrophe occurs anywhere in the world Israel is always among the first to offer and send equipment, medicine, people ... whatever is needed to help.

Today, Israel fights a war with both hands tied behind its back to limit civilian casualties. I just read that Israel is using a sound bomb just to scare people away from a building before it is destroyed. At some point Israelis will fight with both hands and we shall lose a compassionate people, they will become hard.

A failure by Obama to recognize evil and destroy Hamas will mean that America and the free world will be leaderless during the next four years. Our ship of state will crash upon some big rocks. It is time for the President-Elect to take a stand .... now. We must know if our leader has a moral compass.

  3. Obam keeps Gates on. He has the hawkish HRC as Sec. Of State and you're worried Professor. How many times does Obama have to remind you there is onlt one Presdient at a time Buddy? I'm glad two contemporary Republicans remembered wwhat Reagan said about people over there being irrational. And you two should also understand the irrationality of telling your opponent what you're going to do do before you do it.
It does amuse me that the Professor feigns worry about our next President being "clueless." What happened Don? Did one of deluded right wing fools that accused you of going Lib intimidate you into saying something unfounded about President Elect Obama so you could get back in their good graces?

  4. Truth101: Your debate here is really with Norm, but I can say I'm proud to have him writing here as my guest. He speaks with a force of moral clarity virtually unmatched online. Obama has appointed no "hawks." Gates is a "realist" and he's a caretaker until Obama gets his own man.

  5. Truth101: Let's stopping playing in puddles. Obama will set policy. If Gates and Clinton cannot deal with his policy, they will resign. And yes, I think he is clueless. All he worked on for his entire political life was to become the President. Now that he has been mugged by reality of being the "President", and now when every word counts, he is truly lost.
At least Bush has a belief system.

  6. obama has had the luxury of his political and intellectual career of steering clear of controversy unless it safe. you can not vote present in the white house and cannot go to a couple cabinet meetings and return to the campaign trail. you must take a stand. he looked the other in Chicago and if he continues this trend lives will be lost at his account.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I just found out that our hired hand believes America and Israel are bloodthirsty countries and that Israel is unfairly bombing Hamas! Good grief! Thank heaven the man doesn't vote, since he's got about as much sense as my sewing thimble!

Walt and I have made a vow to never discuss politics with him again. He's a very valuable worker and in that respect worth his weight in gold, and I'm so happy he doesn't vote. This mindset of his came as quite a shock, but it shouldn't have as there are so many dimwits running around out there. I only wish the rest of them didn't vote!

As for Obama, who knows? I have to wonder if he even knows what he will do when he actually gets into office. His not knowing may be the reason we aren't hearing from him, and his not knowing is every bit as scary a possibility as the possibility of him siding with Hamas. I guess we are just going to have to wait and see. I sort of feel like I'm waiting for a bomb to drop, and I'm not even in Israel or Gaza!

    Great post, Donald.

I'm sorry to hear about your hired hand's views on Israel. You've blogged on him before glowingly, like family, so this comes as a surprise. But that's the way it is with family, sometimes - you just can't talk politics!

    Have a great weekend.

  11. Mr Gersman, congrats on an exceptional coup! Getting pubbed @ AmPow is significant.

Maybe the Saddleback semi debate has a clue - when asked about 'evil' #44 implied that term didnt really apply to people per se - only to actions.

So far Little Satan has done a bang up job in humanitarian warfar - right up there with the Jenin Blitz, Great Satan's LalaFallujah tour and the Sadr City Lo Down Ho Down.

HAMAS online is actually giving up valuable PR for Little Satan fans - openly complaining that the human shield concept may be a bust as those rascally hot grrls at the IDF are making cell and landline calls to target sites warning innocents to high tail it out of there.

Far from the retarded rocket war of 06 with Hiz'B'Allah - Little Satan is using both hands in Gaza - and her PR staff is formidable.

Congrats again sir. It's prob the first of many.

  12. I will gladly debate Obama's mideast policy and any other policy decisions Obama makes with Norm and anyone else when Obama is President and making policy decisions. We have a history of Bush being a screwup. 82% of Americans think Obama is handling the transition well. I think that bodes well for his being able to handle the rigors of Presidency. And while I appreciate the Professors attempt to reserve judgement on Obama, I take issue with the statement the right will not pillory Obama as much as the left does Bush. Other than the Professor, the rest of the right wingers seem to be attacking Obama all the time. The pious and devout Grace says he's an AntiChrist and hates him. I love you Grace.

  13. Dr.D,
Nice choice on the essay. Norm, nice job. I have always admired your posts. I hope you are wrong about BO.

My personal hope is that he doesn't mess things up too badly. I, along with everybody else, don't know what he will do. After all, all he's done is run for president. We'll see, but I'm not convinced he will support Israel.

I'm with you in thinking that Israel is destined to be alone in the world after they lose their staunchest ally, the US.

Once they are alone, the arabs in the Middle East will declare open season. Then the closet haters in the Arab world will suddenly become a cohesive force, bent on the destruction of Israel. And the US will not deter them any longer. Sad to contemplate.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Law and Order Teacher: Yes, Israel is alone, as this whole conflict and response has demonstrated. I think the U.S. will float around the edges of things while Obama's learning curve gets up to speed. If he plays "honest broker" it'll be a disaster for the future of the Jewish state. His role needs to be to speak out against terror from any source. We need moral clarity, and the odds aren't looking that good yet.

    Thanks for commenting!

Thank you, I have admired your posts too. Yes, as I stated before, I believe that Israel will be abandoned. That is its fate. But do not be so sure about Arab cohesiveness. There is real hatred between Sunni & Shiite; and as the Arabs say "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". The Sunnis in Egypt, Saudi Arabia are not going to be below looking for a new ally. History has some strange twists and turns.

  18. Truth: Obama just released another statement. It says that he is watching the situation and will not say anything more because we only have one president at a time. BS, Copout. 20. Norm..great post!

I'm afraid that the situation with your friends is not an uncommon one.

That's one of the very things that has bothered me about many of his supporters--they are not sure about what he will do, but they are sure that whatever it is, it will be the right thing.

Given the facts of his background and past associations--knowing this, they still voted for him.

I'm still finding it very hard to believe.

  21. ?????

Ok. I've never been a fan of name calling.....but there are times when one just, .....quit acting like dim bulbs!
    .....fake it if you must!

Israel will never ever ever ever EVER be abandoned by the U.S.

We are inextricably linked FINANCIALLY, HISTORICALLY, and CULTURALLY!!

The amount of Israeli cash and investment and citizenry coursing through the U.S. economy and culture rivals Britian, Japan AND the middle east.

And Know this, PEBO is totally on board here.

On a side note....its this kind of thinking, this kind of sensational writing, that has infected the party, the GOP. Its Radical, its Extreme, Its a danger. Just as the lefts agenda is

The trade off of God gifted intelligence for a can of stinking religiosity and a voting block....It was truly a deal with the devil, the Republican Party made for this power...the GOP in bed with Religious evangelists/fanatiscm here in the U.S.

We as a nation are now gauging our conflicts on the Intersections of 4 groups....Christians, Jews, Muslims and Atheists...with a stylized perception of "Evil".

History is ours to repeat with this formula.

  23. Hi Jan!

I think Norm handled the dinner party like a gentleman too. This is a problem, though, this wishy-washy back and forth on Obama among his supporters. It reflects the man himself.

I'm going to try to be optimistic, but the U.S. cannot go down the road of relativism.

    Thanks for commenting!

  24. Cracker: I wouldn't be so quick to give Obama so much credit. The left is demonizing Israel, at home and abroad. Nothing is guaranteed. I'm going to post on Caroline Glick's new essay tonight at J Post, but go over there and check it out for yourself. The entire EU community, not to mention the U.N., backs Palestine and Hamas. Obama's orientation by inclination is with the global community. I take nothing for granted and I think Norm's worries are completely justified. This is not a partisan thing on the GOP side. The Dems have stood by Israel through the Clinton years, but there's no guarantee with "Hussein" in the White House.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Professor,

Your guest essayist did a splendid job in focusing on the cold hard reality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how Obama's shoulders must now bear the weight of the world.

There are two quotes that I think Barack Hussein Obama should memorize and refer to as he contemplates his administration's policy in the region. One is from President John F. Kennedy and the other from Yasser Arafat.

Israel was not created in order to disappear—Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy and it honors the sword of freedom.—John F. Kennedy

We plan to eliminate the state of Israel and establish a purely Palestinian state. We will make life unbearable for Jews by psychological warfare and population explosion. We Palestinians will take over everything, including all of Jerusalem.—Yasser Arafat

    ReplyDelete
  26. There is one other quote I would like to remind your readers of:

Israel is still the only country in the world against which there is a written document to the effect that it must disappear.—1978 Nobel Peace Prize Winner and former Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin

    ReplyDelete
  27. No Sheeples: Thank you for sharing the excellent quotes. We have so much to think about at this time in history. I pray the Kennedy's vision is the right one.

    Have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sure Dr.

Cool heads and sense will prevail.

Let em protest, hold signs, scream bloody murder, they will all be at the bar by the time "Happy hour" starts....

We support the troops here at Ft. Lewis every day, quietly and effectively and in service, Rain or shine and SNOW! its this type of commitment that exists, the commitment of the Rational to continuity and community that exists throughout the West, ....dont let a few televised "possibly paid" sign holders spook you about "Evil"

These sporadic "pro-palestinian demo's" are not representative of any western majority anywhere.

This WHOLE ENTIRE THING has been meticulously planned, coordinated and orchestrated, with the models of both American and Israeli success and failures in the past 7 to 20 years of experience over a 2 year term....

The timing has nothing to do with a Transition. Our admin is seeking diplomacy WHILE letting HAMAS know its "chickens have come home to roost, hatch, whatever"

It is a fine discrimination to know when to recognize radical demonstrations as "credible" and when to dismiss them as "sensational".

There are citizens in the U.S. who WILL demonstrate, take to the streets... for "Miracle Whip" over "Mayo".....

What We have learned is that since "Nixon", reactionary demonstrations" are considered with a "grain-of-salt" by the Rational Majority.

The Mayo folks know the difference

and Norm, Sir, I appreciate the essay also.

And there is a tremendous sign TO the extremists of the middle East and here in the U.S. When the PE calmly says "there's one C in C at a time....I take that a sign of Strength, Discipline and Respect...the characteristics of a Winner.

    Sincerely

  29. This post stirs up so much emotion in me- throughout the election, I wondered how my Jewish friends could support a man who did not seem to support Israel- It seemed that my friends in the U.S. supported Obama, while those in Israel had their doubts- At the time, I figured that my friends in the U.S. must have somehow missed Obama's views on the state of the Middle East and what he plans to do with Israel's enemies- engage in talks?! How do you engage in talks with people who are not rational in their thinking- who are willing to blow themselves up in order to prove a point- themselves and anyone else in their way- I guess, I just don't get it- My other thought is that Obama simply wants everyone to like him, and therefore unable to take any certain stance- In any case, this post was great! I too enjoy meeting with my friends from all walks of life and often find myself keeping silent on issues to maintain the friendship- perhaps that's my downfall AND Obama's as well-

  30. OBAMA'S TEAM IS DOMINATED BY SCOWCROFTIANS: JONES; GATES; ET AL...

THEY ARE THE SO-CALLED "REALISTS" AS IF IT WAS REALISM TO THINK YOU COULD NEGOTIATE WITH THE LIKES OF AHMADINEJAD AND MESHALL!

THEY ARE ON RECORD AS FAVORING THE INSERTION OF NATO TROOPS IN THE WEST BANK, IF NOT GAZA.

AND THESE SCOWCROFTIANS WILL APPEASE THE ENEMY.

THEY SUPPORT APPEASEMENT EVEN THOUGH APPEASEMENT HAS NEVER KEPT THE PEACE OR WON A WAR OR LIBERATED A SINGLE SOLITARY SOUL. NEVERTHELESS, IT REMAINS THE FAVORITE TOOL OF THE LEFT.

THIS IS BECAUSE THE LEFT HAS BASICALLY BOUGHT INTO THE LIE THAT THE WEST IS THE ROOT OF ALL OUR CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS.

THE LEFT BELIEVES THAT THE WEST CAUSED THIRD WORLD POVERTY, AGW, AND MOST OF HISTORY'S GENOCIDE.

THEY ARE WRONG ON ALL THREE COUNTS.

BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THESE LEFTIST LIES, THEY ARE PREDISPOSED TO TAKE OUR ENEMY'S SIDE.

THIS IS COMPOUNDED BY THEIR CORE BELIEF IN MORAL RELATIVISM.

BUT IT'S A WEIRD MORAL RELATIVISM - ONE THAT CAN ALWAYS MAKE AN EXCUSE FOR OUR ENEMIES, BUT NEVER FOR US OR OUR ALLIES!

THEIR LOATHING OF THE JUDEO-CHRISTIAN WEST TRUMPS ALL ELSE!

IN ADDITION, THEY SEE JEWS AND CHRISTIANS AS INVADERS IN THE HOLY LAND!

HAHA! THE FACT IS THAT ARABS AND MUSLIMS ARE THE INVADERS AND THAT THE CRUSADES WERE A COUNTER-OFFENSIVE,

    JUST

    LIKE

    THE

    CURRENT

    GAZA WAR.

THE INTERNATIONAL FORCE THAT THE SCOWFCROFTIANS (WHO DOMINATE OBAMA'S FOREIGN POLICY TEAM) FAVOR WOULD SERVE TO PROTECT HAMAS - JUST AS UNIFIL PROTECTS HIZBALLAH.

IT WOULD MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE IDF TO RETALIATE.

MOST OF OBAMA'S BASE - THAT IS MOST OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY AND ALL OF THE LEFT - SUPPORTS THE ENEMIES OF ISRAEL: A RASMUSSEN POLL THIS WEEK SHOWED THAT SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL IN THE DEM PARTY IS BELOW 35% WHEREAS IN THE GOP IT IS ABOVE 60%.

THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT WHERE OBAMA WILL FALL WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE: HE WILL SIDE WITH THE UN AND EU. NOT ISRAEL.

ISRAEL KNOWS THIS; THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WHY THEY ACTED NOW.

    AND WHY EGYPT SUPPORTED ISRAEL.

AS A GOOD LITTLE SCOWCROFTIAN, OBAMA WILL SUCK UP TO IRAN, AND IRAN IS BEHIND HIZBALLAH AND HAMAS.

EGYPT KNOWS THIS AND THAT'S WHY THEY SUPPORT THE IDF.

WHODATHUNKIT POSSIBLE: OBAMA IS LESS SUPPORTIVE OF ISRAEL THAN MUBARAK!

THAT'S THE BRAVE NEW WORLD WE ENTER IN JUST THREE WEEKS...

  31. Obama must recognize evil?? He can't see it in the mirror. He thinks he's God. I think anyone who thought he would support Israel - doesn't realize that Muslims typically... don't. The Black Liberation Theology of UCC is Nation of Islam Theology falsely called "Christian". He was raised Muslim. His father was Muslim, etc, etc. He chose a Nation of Islam Church. He's Muslim, imo.

They have a code of secrecy and deceit to achieve their agendas.

Obama recognize evil?? It's right there in the mirror for him to see.

And bad news for you also Mr. Reliapundit. You are a fine example of a person that neither knows or understands the issue, MAKES SH%T UP. Why doesn't one of you, or any other right winger explain how wanting peace in the world is such a bad thing. Do you nuts somehow think God needs help delivering Armageddon?

  34. Great post Norm! However, I have to say I have very limited faith in Barry's ability to recognize any evil. Rezko, Ayres, Un-Rev. Wright, and if the mainstream media would actually do their job, the list would probably go on deeper.

His past does not engender any faith in his future. I can "hope" he'll "change" but I have no faith in it.

Well, I broke my own damn rule on those two words. Never in the same sentence. Well, time to go do penence and clean the bathroom.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, Cracker, again, I think you underestimate the forces of global leftist totalitarianism. It is a sign that Obama has confidence in the current administration and in the constitutional process to say "one administration at a time." I think Norm's point is well taken, however, that Obama has an opportunity here to speak out. He can do that as PE.

I gather you are an Obama supporter. This is a man who by training and upbringing is perfectly comfortable hanging out with those who are the most diabolical haters of goodness, reason, and tradition.

This is why I blog. We don't see these demonizations against an American administration when a Democrat is in power. We will see protests, but Obama will not be burned in effigy. Keep coming back to visit and you'll see, and check my links.

Like I said to Grace: Maybe history will shake Obama from his postmodern mindset and he'll abandon relativism and see the evil, and then combat it.

  42. I haven't read this comment thread closely, but I did read the post.
Mr. Gersman seems unaware of the fact that in a speech to AIPAC last June, Obama said unequivocally that Hamas had to renounce terror and the goal of Israel's destruction before it (Hamas) could be viewed as a responsible participant in a peace process. Obama's declining to say anything on this in public while Bush is still in office is entirely appropriate; indeed, speaking out on this as pres-elect would be counterproductive, regardless of what he said, and, in my view, probably improper.
The post reflects a manichean, simplistic view of the Middle East conflict in which *all* good is on one side and *all* evil on the other. That is the world of fantasy, not reality.
I also note that D.Douglas in the last comment refers to the protests vs Israel's actions as "anti-Semitic". Whatever one's view of the current situation, it is not necessarily anti-Semitic to protest Israeli policy and actions.

  45. Very good essay by Mr Gersman, Donald.

This silence from Obama does not bode well. It was good that he reappointed Robert Gates as SecDef, but the moral issues are what make the man.

It was also all very fine and good for Obama to make tough-sounding speeches before AIPAC, but governing is another matter.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Truth101... I'm sincerely in good nature amused. :) Have you studied the matter?? The theological system of the Black Liberation Theology movement was created by James Cone. James Cone wanted to create a "new Jesus". James Cone rejected the Christian Jesus of the Bible and MLK. James Cone wanted to create a Muslim Jesus for Malcolm X. James Cone wanted to create a Muslim religion that could call itself "Christian". This is the religion of National of Islam leader Farrakhan - it's Black Liberation Theology. The UCC denomination is not a "Christian" denomination that has any problem with the Muslim religion. The Muslim religion is accepted in the UCC denomination. Trinity UCC under Reverend Wright issued Farrakhan a "Lifetime Achievement Award". That's how "tight" their theologies and their belief systems are. Just because they mention "Jesus" - that doesn't mean that Trinity UCC is anything related to biblical Christianity. They worship the Jesus of Cone- a Jesus Cone created: a MUSLIM "Jesus". It's NOT biblical Christianity. It's Nation of Islam teaching. Even Farrakhan in the Nation of Islam speaks of Jesus... and is CLEARLY Islamic. Again, it's a shared religion.

I stand by what I said. Obama is MUSLIM as is Wright and Farrakhan and Cone in their theological systems. Moreover, Cone calls for the wholesale slaughter of WHITES and JEWS and all those who will not worship his MUSLIM "Jesus". That's exactly what Islam always does. Cone wants all Christians who worship the biblical Jesus DEAD... and it's clearly stated in his books. That's the "jihad" of the Muslim faith. Please don't tell me I am wrong based on a "word" Obama used when he said he went to a "Christian" church. It was MUSLIM from my view in it's theology - which you clearly haven't studied. You also didn't realize that Cone, I presume, calls for GENOCIDE of whites, Jews, and all those who don't worship his "Muslim Jesus" - according to his MUSLIM faith. It's the same difference- no matter what they call it as I see it: MUSLIM.

Didn't you realize this man you supported worshipped in a church whose theology demands GENOCIDE of whites and Jews and all who will not worship his MUSLIM created God?? And you don't think Obama is the 666 beast?? I still do. You might have a very big surprise coming - sooner than you think... in Obama. You might want to mark my words. Thanks for the comment - I realize you probably don't know that you potentially voted for perhaps... a Hitler.

    Grace.

  47. Hi Donald...

You've been blogging the truth about Obama for some time, I agree - and doing a great job. I'm not sure how my comment sounded. It's about Obama being so blind he thinks himself God when really he is evil incarnate. He can't see it.

In time, people will realize what they are dealing with in Obama. It staggers the mind. I think, Donald, you are a good man who projects to certain degree your own goodness on Obama in hoping he will serve this country well. He's going to destroy it. I'm seeing him for what he is spiritually, imo... but I think it will take time for people to "register" the true horror of what this man truly is. I meant no criticism at all towards you... was just commenting on Obama. In my opinion, he is the 666 beast of the book of Revelation... and that will become, I believe, more and more clear in time.

Thanks again for your post, I apologize if there was any confusion that I was failing to recognize your strong stand against Obama's policies, etc. all along. :)

Please please, let us all know these apparently fabulous alruistic acts of your beloved Israel.

  49. Wow, you right wingers sure like to congregate together? No wonder you never "hear" the other side of issues. YOu spend your time visiting like minded parrots who never challenge your mis-guided idiocy.

  50. Grace: We only differ a teeny-tiny bit. I'm simply giving Obama the benefit of the doubt. No worries...

  51. "Wow, you right wingers sure like to congregate together? No wonder you never "hear" the other side of issues."

C.S.: Don't insult me. I've been listening to the "other side" blather on about "BushHitler" for darned near 8 years. I've heard the other side, and it's the enemy.

  52. Don, I love that you cite the "BushHitler" rhetoric of the "other side" a few comments after one of your biggest fans just called Obama "perhaps...a Hitler". I can only assume that this is but one "teeny-tiny bit" over which you and Grace (and every other net-savvy individual entirely ignorant of Godwin's Law) differ. Keep spewing the wisdom, professor.

    Norm, eh: why bother?

  53. JBW: Certainly you can do better than taking issue with Grace. Norm did an excellent jog, in any case.

  54. I would like an honest truthful answer, What type of theology should Black people embrace? This is not meant to be racist, but the manner in which christanity is portrayed today is is not God, Jesus and the Angels all caucasians?

I thought God was going to re-establish the Zionist nation of Isreal, not the victor's of WWII?

  55. Mrleexslave: Have to save that for another post...

  56. Don, are you now finally dismissing her wingnuttery? And I was actually taking issue with your own tone deafness on the issue of multiple Hitler references in the comment section of a post about recognizing evil.

As always, you seem to take great exception when a comparison is made to Bush yet let the same accusation about Obama slide without condemnation. I understand partisanship but hypocrisy is hypocrisy and I would expect someone of your education level to know the difference.

All right, Norm: your post is well written but I disagree with your premise. Most of your reservations about Obama are merely your opinion about what he might do when he finally takes office. Just because some of your Jewish friends don't know what this will be has no bearing on what will actually happen.

Is Hamas evil? I doubt it; saying that things or people are intrinsically good or evil is a simplistic way of looking at the world. Yes, they commit many evil acts and should be condemned for them, but they also do many charitable things as well. I don't say that to exalt them but merely to point out that there is a lot of grey area in morality. Now I'm sure that sentence will earn me multiple accusations of being a leftist, anti-Semitic bastard but I could really care less.

As for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict I hew to the same position I've always taken: these are two groups of people who are arguing about what an invisible sky god supposedly said to someone thousands of years ago and we all know that people in biblical times never lied or stretched the truth, right? In short, despite the geopolitical significance of their conflict I think they're all pretty much crazy and I don't see anything happening today that hasn't already happened many times in the past.

But as always, Obama has a cooler head than myself so everyone here who is so convinced that he'll just abandon Israel can exhale. Despite his still not being president he's shown time and again that he is not the radical leftist the right tried so hard to paint him as during the election (to the recent chagrin of many on the left, I might add).

As cracker correctly points out, we are "inextricably linked FINANCIALLY, HISTORICALLY, and CULTURALLY!!" All of this noise is just right wingers trying to scare their paranoid base about our new "Muslim" president to be. Keep some perspective.

  57. JBW: It's a debate thread. I'm not going to endorse every comment, and Grace and I disagree on a lot. Frankly, I delete a lot of comments you never see, because they are hateful, racist, or anti-Semitic. I keep a pretty civil blog shop running, no?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Despite your occasional odd flashes Don, yes: I do think you run a fairly civil place here.

I'm just saying that I would talk shit on someone comparing either Bush or Obama to Hitler back at my place but that's just me; I was merely taking exception to your selective outrage but as always: it's your site, chief.

    America should expect that
