Panama Charges North Korean Freighter Crew

Bizarre story.

At NYT:

Panama brushed aside North Korea’s demands on Thursday that it release an impounded North Korean freighter and its 35-member crew, pressing criminal charges against all aboard for endangering public security by attempting to transport a concealed cargo of Cuban weapons through the Panama Canal.

The charges against the crew members, lodged by the office of the prosecutor, Javier Caraballo, heightened the Panamanian confrontation with North Korea over the ship, the 450-foot Chong Chon Gang, which had been awaiting permission to cross the canal for the voyage home after a visit to Cuba.

The vessel was impounded on Sunday after the crew, armed with what officials called sticks, tried to fend off Panamanian marines investigating whether it was carrying contraband. They found old radar, missile and aircraft components buried in the hold of the ship, underneath more than 200,000 bags of Cuban brown sugar.

A statement by the prosecutor’s office said all the accused had exercised their right to remain silent when the charges were formally lodged. The crew was expected to remain in detention while the Panamanian authorities finished unloading the vessel, which could take days.

The criminal charges were announced as North Korea broke its silence over the impounded ship and demanded that Panama let the vessel and crew depart. A statement by the North Korean Foreign Ministry asserted that the ship had been transporting the Cuban weapons to North Korea for refurbishment under a legal contract. The North Korean statement also criticized Panama for using what it called the pretext of searching the vessel for narcotics and for Panama’s violent treatment of the crew.

The seizing of the vessel has cast a light on the clandestine maritime trading practices of North Korea, one of the world’s most isolated and impoverished countries, which has been further hobbled by United Nations sanctions over its nuclear weapons and proliferation activities.

Detroit Files Largest Municipal Bankruptcy in U.S. History

At WSJ, "Record Bankruptcy for Detroit: Motor City 'Is Broke,' Governor Says, as It Seeks to Restructure $18 Billion in Debt":

DETROIT—The city of Detroit filed for federal bankruptcy protection Thursday after decades of decline, a new low for a city that once defined industrial America's might but was hollowed out by the flight of residents and businesses to the suburbs.

The filing by the automobile capital and onetime music powerhouse—which has liabilities of more than $18 billion—is the country's largest-ever municipal bankruptcy case.

The move to restructure the debt is bound to set off months, if not years, of legal wrangling, asset sales and cuts to benefits for Detroit workers and retirees, including 20,000 on city pensions. Owners of the city's bonds are expected to battle with retirees and others for pieces of the city's diminished wealth.

Detroit is no stranger to bankruptcy after two of its most prominent companies—General Motors Co. GM +1.32% and Chrysler Group LLC—entered and quickly exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, thanks to an $80 billion federal bailout.

But without a similar rescue—which the White House has indicated isn't forthcoming—Thursday's filing is fundamentally different and potentially much more treacherous for the city, officials and experts said. It casts the nation's 18th largest city into largely uncharted legal waters because few municipalities—and none this size—have undergone financial reorganization.

"I am terrified, and I am nervous," said Vaughn Derderian, the 36-year-old manager of the Anchor Bar, a fixture in downtown Detroit. "It is like being on a speeding freight train and you have no idea where it's going to go."
Yeah, well Detroit's lacking the big union clout, apparently.

Hollywood's Highest Paid Actors

At the New York Post, "Robert Downey Jr. Hollywood Highest Paid Actor - 2012-2013":

Every project “Iron Man” actor Robert Downey Jr. touches is turning to gold.

The action-adventure hero tops Forbes magazine’s list of highest-earning Hollywood actors — raking in $75 million for the year ending June 1.

It’s been a remarkable ride to superstardom for the 48-year-old Downey, who burst on the scene as a teen — but whose life and career were in shambles amid his drug addiction and related legal troubles from 1996 to 2001.

Downey’s “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3” were box-office smashes this past year.

Federal investigators Demand Hold on #Zimmerman Trial Evidence

I don't doubt for a second that George Zimmerman could be brought up on federal charges, despite being easily acquitted at trial and without the slightest whiff of racial intent in the case. All the claims of "racism" are in the fanatically wild imaginations of the depraved leftists.

At WESH-TV Orlando, "Hold placed on George Zimmerman trial evidence."

Race-Baiting Leftists Push Gun Control After #Zimmerman Trial

Attorney General Eric Holder, along with the MSNBC hacktivists, has been pushing to ramp up gun control efforts in the wake of Zimmerman's acquittal, even though the trial wasn't at all about gun rights or stand your ground laws.

This letter to the editor at the Los Angeles Times really captures how regressive-leftists fantasize about this, "Letters: Trayvon Martin, race and justice":
A relatively minor altercation resulted in a tragedy. Who really knows who was the aggressor and who was the defender?

But what is clear is that the gun used by George Zimmerman escalated what should have been a relatively minor altercation. Without the gun, Zimmerman and Martin would have exchanged a few blows and then been on their way.

This is another example of why firearms do not make us safer. It is insanity to arm the populace. Arguments that should end by both parties walking away with bruises now end with one party being taken away by the coroner.

Jim Stetson
Torrance
Actually, the brutal fact is that Trayvon Martin could have killed George Zimmerman, the way he was pummeling him ground and pound style, like a drugged-out MMA mf.

And notice that "arm the populace" line, which is code for repealing Second Amendment rights. F-king depraved people.

But never mind. Regressives won't ever see clearly on this, because they've got too much invested in shaking down the system and disarming law abiding Americans.

But when that's all the morally bankrupt race-greivance mongers have, they'll bludgeon you until you capitulate. People get tired of this shit and they just sop off the pleaders with grub and collective booty. The Democrats are the worst at this. They're out of ideas and corrupt to the core. It's sickening.

Here's my earlier entry, "Next Frontier of the Civil Rights Movement?"

Contaminated School Lunches Kill at Least 23 Children in India

The costs of "free" food.

At the Wall Street Journal, "Tainted School Lunch Kills at Least 23 Indian Children: Free Food Was Provided Under Government's Midday-Meal Program":

PATNA, India—In a threadbare hospital here, 5-year-old Rashmi Kumari is fighting a powerful poison. "She is a brilliant student," said her uncle as he tried to distract her by asking her to recite poems.

Rashmi is also the only child in her household left alive.

Her cousins, Anshu and Kushboo, died after eating a school lunch now believed to have been contaminated with a pesticide compound, according to a hospital official. The disaster has left at least 23 children dead as of Thursday morning and spotlights the shortcomings in a government school-lunch program intended to feed India's millions of malnourished students.

Initial investigations suggest that organophosphorus, commonly used in farm pesticides, may have been mixed into the rice, beans and potato curry served Tuesday at an elementary school in Gandaman, a village in the impoverished state of Bihar, according to Amarkant Jha Amar, medical superintendent at the hospital.

The students became sick and suffered from vomiting, fainting and foaming at the mouth. More than two dozen victims are still being treated. Mr. Amar said patients are receiving medicine to neutralize the chemical, which is similar to nerve agents such as sarin.

It remains unclear how or where the chemical got into the food. A state-level investigation is under way and the first report is expected Thursday, according to local police and a district magistrate.
Foaming at the mouth? Sarin? What a horrible way to die, and so senselessly tragic.

More, "India’s Problems With Free School Meals."

Next Frontier of the Civil Rights Movement?

At the clip, Al Sharpton calls this a "social movement for justice," and Jesse Jackson claims "massive protests" will lead to legislation combating the purported states' rights movement threat to civil rights.

It wouldn't have mattered what the verdict had been, we'd be having some kind of "social justice" shakedown scam coming down against the evil "white supremacist" regime. This is what's become of the post-MLK civil rights movement: angry, racist leftists grasping at anything remotely relevant to an agenda, so they can confiscate a bigger piece of the collective pie. Total moral bankruptcy. It's disgusting.

Oh, and at the second half of the clip you get the bonus of black racist Joy Reid. The discussion immediately devolves to stand your ground laws and the so-called proliferation of concealed carry permits, which allegedly empowered George Zimmerman to kill Trayvon Martin. The radical left is milking this for all it's worth, man.

And see Peter Wehner, "The Zimmerman Trial as Rorschach Test":
In response to my post on the George Zimmerman trial and the left’s reaction to it, I heard from some people I know who felt like I erred in my analysis. They believe Trayvon Martin was targeted as a suspect because he was a black teen, that it’s clear that Zimmerman engaged in racial profiling, and so race was a motivating factor in the Martin killing.

People can decide for themselves if what I wrote is sufficiently careful and fair-minded. But I thought I’d use the comments and concerns raised by these individuals to clarify and expand on some points.

What I argued was that there’s simply no indication that George Zimmerman is a racist. No evidence was presented at the trial that the killing was the equivalent of what the head of the NAACP called a “modern-day lynching.” It matters that neither the prosecution, nor the defense, nor the police, nor the jurors ever said that this trial was about race. In fact, they said the opposite. Many in the media (especially NBC/MSNBC) have acted in deeply irresponsible ways. And comparisons to what happened in Sanford, Florida on February 26, 2012 to what happened to Emmett Till on August 28, 1955 is a terrible disfigurement of history.

On the matter of whether Martin was targeted because of his race: Sanford Police Department detective Chris Serino’s interpretation sounds plausible. He told the FBI that Zimmerman’s actions were not based on Martin’s skin color but rather based on his attire, the total circumstances of the encounter and the previous burglary suspects in the community. And if Trayvon Martin had been a 75-year-old African American man in a suit using a cane and walking next to his four-year-old grandchild, we all know nothing would have happened that night. If, on the other hand, a 28-year-old “white Hispanic” male with rough attire had been walking around his neighborhood on a rainy night, George Zimmerman may well have followed him. It appears what Zimmerman was doing was engaging in criminal profiling. Now, whether it’s inappropriate for race to ever, under any circumstances, be taken into account when it comes to criminal profiling is an issue worth discussing. But that is entirely different than Zimmerman killing Martin was based on racial animus, which is what racial demagogues like Al Sharpton are saying.

At the same time, I want to underscore again my belief that George Zimmerman made some tragic errors. He’s no hero. Moreover, Trayvon Martin not only didn’t deserve to die; he was innocent of any wrongdoing. The fact that he was killed is a crushing blow from which his family will never fully recover. His parents are living through an ordeal they didn’t deserve. A month from now the rest of us will have moved on from this trial. They will not have. Those of us who believe the Zimmerman verdict was correct should not forget that.

But the trial and its aftermath demonstrated something else as well. It served as a kind of Rorschach test. Some people who paid close attention to the trial came away convinced that the second-degree murder charge against George Zimmerman was indefensible, that the jury verdict was correct, and that the effort by some on the left to turn this into a Mississippi Burning moment is wrong and reckless. And many of those who claim solidarity with the African American community right now have had little or nothing to say about black-on-black crime, which is doing far more damage to the African American community than the type of incident that occurred in the Zimmerman-Martin confrontation. The moral outrage therefore seems somewhat contrived and convenient.

'A Tsunami of Anti-Capitalism'

Hey, a pretty good description when you think about it, from Fox News' Eric Bolling.

Yes, and the so-called "peaceful protesters" are unilaterally lowering the prices of goods and services --- by helping themselves to the booty.

At the Los Angeles Times, "'Flash mob' of thieves causes chaotic night in Hollywood":
The rallying cries shot out across Twitter and Facebook on Tuesday evening.

"Take the riot to Hollywood," one expletive-laden message on Twitter beseeched. "Hollywood. 7:30."

That invitation for trouble and others like it, police believe, were the seeds of a bizarre, chaotic night in the city's entertainment mecca that caught the LAPD off guard and left city officials scrambling to assure tourists and revelers, once again, that Hollywood is a safe place to be.

A group of 40 to 50 people, mostly teenagers, heeded the social media calls and went on what police described as a rolling crime wave.

LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith said it appears the group thought Hollywood would be an easy target because police were focused on patrolling the Crenshaw District, which had been the scene of renegade violence during protests over the George Zimmerman verdict in Florida on Monday evening. As the problems began in Hollywood, the department was also dealing with protesters marching through downtown.

"What we're thinking is these youngsters took advantage of our redeployment of officers down to the Crenshaw District last night and decided that this would be a good night to come up to Hollywood and act a little crazy," Smith said.
Just a little.

Trayvon Martin's Parents Interview on 'CBS News This Morning'

I think they did the right thing laying low while a lot of the violence and leftist regressive recrimination roils over.

At LAT, "Trayvon Martin's parents 'stunned absolutely' by Zimmerman verdict":

For the first time since George Zimmerman was acquitted of murdering their son, Trayvon Martin's parents gave TV interviews Thursday morning to decry the verdict and ask the federal government to continue to investigate.

Sybrina Fulton, Martin's mother, said in a "CBS This Morning" interview that she was "stunned absolutely" by the not-guilty verdict handed down Saturday by the six-woman jury in Seminole County, Fla.

"I thought surely that he [Zimmerman] would be found guilty of second-degree murder, manslaughter at the least," Fulton said. "But I just knew that they would see that this was a teenager just trying to get home. This was no burglar. This was somebody's son that was trying to get home."

In the same interview with CBS, Martin's father, Tracy Martin, said he wanted Americans to know "that Trayvon was a fun-loving child. He was our child. We miss him dearly."

Martin added, "Just to have your child's life taken away from you like that, it hurts. And it's a process that will take a long time to start the recovery from."
I feel for the parents, but their views of Trayvon aren't rooted in reality, as much as they love him.
