Full Metal Saturday: Ann Althouse

Well, I don't know if this will meet Jules Crittenden's criteria, but Ann Althouse is our featured lovely for this week's "Full Metal Roundup."

Ann Althouse

Or should I say our featured voracious vixen hottie for the week?

Althouse's whirlwind blogging romance is covered in today's New York Times, "
Commoner Captures Princess, Blog Version":

Ann Althouse, 58, is a law professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison who blogs about politics, law and cultural whatnots in a sharp, occasionally ribald tone. She admires Rush Limbaugh, voted for George Bush in ’04 and Barack Obama in ’08. She attracts derision and applause from 500,000 monthly visitors.

The jeers [from Althouse's critics] spiked ever since the March 22 announcement on her blog that this divorced mother of two adult sons, stalwartly single for more than 20 years, is engaged to a commenter known simply as “Meade.” Except for her closest readers, the blogosphere was taken by surprise.

“Does she know the guy?” sniggered Mickey Kaus, the Slate blogger, in a bloggingheads.tv interview.

In a phone interview, Ms. Althouse shot back, “If a male blogger found women to consort with by going into his comments, I think he’d be congratulated.”

The tale of Meade and Ms. Althouse is a cross between the studiedness of a Victorian epistolary courtship —a modern-day Robert Browning googling his dear Elizabeth Barrett — and the wackiness of 21st-century life online. The Althouse commentariat would log into the virtual local pub of the blog, gossiping and fantasizing about their queen’s offline love life, and even egging the couple on. When the announcement finally came, the commentariat cheered, bursting with hometown pride that a humble, anonymous son of the Internet could win the hand of the blogger.

Until now, Meade liked his online anonymity just fine. But at his fiancĂ©e’s urging, he agreed to be unmasked here. He is Laurence Meade, 55, divorced, father of a college student and a garden designer and caretaker for a Cincinnati estate.
There's a picture of Meade at the piece. He looks like a nice man, and I know he's a pithy commenter! But online love involves security clearances, so take note of Meade's assurances to Althouse upon asking her out: "... he offered his Social Security number, in case she wanted to run a criminal check ... "

Read the whole thing,
here (via Memeorandum).

Now, while most people can't resist a good love story, let's not forget the Full Metal Saturday Reach Around!

My friend Carol at
No Sheeples Here was a little reluctant to put up a "Rule 5" post, but she came through with a winner! And to futher demonstrate that women love posting Rule 5 hotness, Vanessa, my former student, has posted some Daniel Craig beefcake. But don't miss Monique Stuart's phenomenal entry with Catherine Zeta Jones! And just to throw out a related link, Monique's entry got a big thumbs up from Ennuipundit in the comments.

And just to indicate that breast-blogging shows up where you least expect it, note how Jawa Report posts a photo of
Yasmin Fastok Bakri Mohammad, who is probably off the hotness scale for my regular "Rule 5" entries!

Lance Burri's always good for some smooth weekend blogging, for example, in "
I don’t know who’s been finding The Trog by googling “socialist troglodyte...”."

Now, I don't see
a weekend roundup at Pundette's, but head over there anyway for some great blogging. And make that a double with William Jacobson's Legal Insurrection. Dave at Point of a Gun is worth a look as well.

And I conclude with the obligatory link to Glenn Reynolds.

More later ...

Full Metal Saturday: Mary-Louise Parker

It's been so hot around here lately I'm actually pressed for some Full Metal follow up action! In the past few weekends I've had Marisa Miller, Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum, and Bar Rafaeli. Plus, I've done a couple of Rule 5 entries with Britney Spears and Lady GaGa!

Loosen those ties boys!

So this weekend, since Showtime's rolling out
a big promotion for the 5th season premier of Weeds, please enjoy a couple of photos of the lovely Mary-Louise Parker:The photo credits, by the way, are from this awesome Mary-Louise Parker slideshow.

I was tempted to post on
Simona Halep, but lots of others are blogging on her scheduled breast reduction.

And speaking of breasts, test your skills with this "
Whose Boobs" slideshow!

Now, let's do a little blogging roundup!

First, check out
TrogloPundit's regularly-scheduled Rule 5 post (Molly Sims is a nice inclusion!). Also, Chris Wysocki's got a neat Barbara Feldon/Anne Hathaway camparison, "Rule 5 Weekend: Agent 99." (More Anne Hathaway here.)

For a couple of roundups, Smitty at The Other McCain has his Saturday linkfest, "
Flagrantly Myopic Judicial Ruminations Amaze"; as does Carol at No Sheeples Here!, "Full Metal Jacket Reach-Around Saturday For May 30, 2009."

For my other blog buddies, click the links:

Full Metal Saturday: Caroline Glick

I'm mixing it up a bit this weekend for Full Metal Saturday!

I want to thank, right off the bat, the network of bloggers who make up the American Power community. Some folks link often, and some less so - and it's all appreciated. Mostly, though, I just like having friends and allies who read my stuff and who encourage me to keep plugging away.

A special thanks goes out to Chris Smith at The Other McCain.

"Smitty," as he's known, keeps the Rule 5 aggregation-machine pumping at Stacy's place. A lot of bloggers are thankful for the roundups, and it's helped their networking as well. In any case, I'm sending out thanks to everyone. And here's wishing all my friends many happy years of blogging. Don't forget to have some fun while we take back power in Washington! Here we go, in no particular order:

Pat's Daily Rants, Bob's Bar & Grill, Power Line, Melanie Morgan, Dave in Boca, Neo-Neocon, Right in a Left World, Flag Gazer, Politics and Critical Thinking, Riehl World View, Midnight Blue, Caroline Glick, The Average American, The Griper, FouseSquawk, The Other McCain, Cheat Seeking Missiles, Roger Simon, Classical Values, Samantha Speaks, Grizzly Mama, The Capitol Tribune, The Patriot Room, The Real World, RADARSITE, Serr8d's Cutting Edge, Bloviating Zeppelin, Born Again Redneck The Educated Shoprat, Gateway Pundit, Political Pistachio, Liberty Pundit, Not One Red Cent, Phyllis Chesler, Right View from the Left Coast, Generation Patriot, Macsmind, Flopping Aces, Edge's Conservative Movies, Stop the ACLU, The Conservative Manifesto, Gates of Vienna, Joust The Facts, Panhandle Poet, Steven Givler, The Astute Blogger, Chris Wysocki, Moonbattery, Sweating Through the Fog, Three Beers Later, PA Pundits, Paco Enterprises, Ken Davenport, Sister Toldjah, Blazing Cat Fur, The Daley Gator, Just One Minute, Dave's World, Sparks From the Anvil, Right Truth, Dave's Notepad, The Red Hunter, Maggie's Farm, The Next Right, This Ain't Hell, Stop the ACLU, Right Wing Nuthouse, Melissa Clouthier, Paula in Israel, Pamela Geller, Vanessa's Blog, St. Blogustine, Yid With Lid, Pondering Penguin, Betsy's Page, The Anchoress, Ace of Spades HQ, Right Wing Sparkle, Thunder Run, The Classic Liberal, Conservative Grapevine, Cassy Fiano, Jim Treacher, NetRightNation, Q and O, Urban Grounds, Ed Driscoll, Cold Fury, Michelle Malkin, Neptunus Lex, Neo-Neocon, The Astute Bloggers, The Liberty Papers, The Monkey Cage, Law and Order Teacher, Mike's America, AubreyJ, Dan Collins, The Jungle Hut, Wake Up America, Dan Riehl, Nikki's Blog, Big Girl Pants, Maggie's Notebook, Hummers & Cigarettes, Mark Goluskin, Jawa Report, Darleen Click, The Skepticrats, Fausta's Blog, Clueless Emma, Obob's World, Seymour Nuts, Red State, Dr. Sanity, The Desert Glows Green, Not One Red Cent, Vinegar and Honey, Sarge Charlie, Thoughts With Attitude, Kim Priestap, Swedish Meatballs Confidential, Five Feet of Fury, Amy Proctor, Blonde Sagacity, Liberty Papers, TigerHawk, Point of a Gun, Right Wing News, And So it Goes in Shreveport, Nice Deb, Becky Brindle, GrEaT sAtAn'S gIrLfRiEnD, Fishersville Mike, Ann Althouse, The Blog Prof, Monique Stuart, No Sheeples Here!, Dana at CSPT, Glenn Reynolds, Obi’s Sister, Right Truth, Gold-Plated Witch on Wheels, Chicago Ray, Ace of Spades HQ, Natalie's Blog, Jimmie Bise, Little Miss Attila, Moe Lane, Private Pigg, Pundit & Pundette, The Rhetorican, R.S. Now, since this post really is a Full Metal Roundup, let me share Caroline Glick's essay on Barack Obama and Middle East international politics: "Obama's Arabian Dreams."

I turn to Caroline Glick when I want the best analysis on Israeli security politics from a neoconservative perspective. She's the best! Check out her Wikipedia entry for some background. With all due respect, Bar Rafaeli may be the more in tune with my regular Saturday postings, but Caroline's got a hot Zionist thing going on herself!

In any case, check out Caroline's piece:

US President Barack Obama claims to be a big fan of telling the truth. In media interviews ahead of his trip to Saudi Arabia and Egypt and during his big speech in Cairo on Thursday, he claimed that the centerpiece of his Middle East policy is his willingness to tell people hard truths.

Indeed, Obama made three references to the need to tell the truth in his so-called address to the Muslim world.

Unfortunately, for a speech billed as an exercise in truth telling, Obama's address fell short. Far from reflecting hard truths, Obama's speech reflected political convenience.

Obama's so-called hard truths for the Islamic world included statements about the need to fight so-called extremists; give equal rights to women; provide freedom of religion; and foster democracy. Unfortunately, all of his statements on these issues were nothing more than abstract, theoretical declarations devoid of policy prescriptions.

He spoke of the need to fight Islamic terrorists without mentioning that their intellectual, political and monetary foundations and support come from the very mosques, politicians and regimes in Saudi Arabia and Egypt that Obama extols as moderate and responsible.

He spoke of the need to grant equality to women without making mention of common Islamic practices like so-called honor killings, and female genital mutilation. He ignored the fact that throughout the lands of Islam women are denied basic legal and human rights. And then he qualified his statement by mendaciously claiming that women in the US similarly suffer from an equality deficit. In so discussing this issue, Obama sent the message that he couldn't care less about the plight of women in the Islamic world.

So, too, Obama spoke about the need for religious freedom but ignored Saudi Arabian religious apartheid. He talked about the blessings of democracy but ignored the problems of tyranny.

In short, Obama's "straight talk" to the Arab world, which began with his disingenuous claim that like America, Islam is committed to "justice and progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings," was consciously and fundamentally fraudulent. And this fraud was advanced to facilitate his goal of placing the Islamic world on equal moral footing with the free world.

See the full essay, here.

Send me an e-mail at my Blogger profile if you've been left off the network roundup above. I'll be reposting the links periodically!

P.S. Snooper's Report let off some steam yesterday after participating in a comment thread here. So, once again, hat's off to those who keep the flame of freedom burning across the blogosphere.

The Death of Collaboration in the Independent Blogosphere

Robert Stacy McCain published an interesting post the other day, "Where Were You in 2002?"

He's asking about where folks were 11 years ago when the independent blogosphere was the vital forum for news reporting and analysis independent of the mainstream media. 2002's a long time ago. I don't think I was reading blogs intentionally at that point. It was still early in my career at LBCC and I was focused mostly on teaching and  research in political science. It was Dan Drezner's 2004 blogging piece in Foreign Policy that turned me on to the blogosphere and there's been no turning back (see, "Web of Influence"). At that time I was reading Drezner and Virginia Postrel. A little later Althouse became my favorite blog, and by 2006 I decided to get my blogging feet wet. American Power went live in October 2007. I've had a good run so far and I expect to be plugging away until I get bored or the progressives are successful in getting me fired. (Hell, that wouldn't stop me anyway, so WTF).

I've never considered myself an influential blogger (although my inbox, filled with all kinds of free books and promotions from publishers and blog newbies, often tells me otherwise). It was during the 2007 GOP primaries when I got really serious about having an impact and in 2008, when John McCain won the Republican nomination, I felt some vindication for my efforts. One result was that I got picked up by RealClearPolitics later that year. But honestly, I've had more fun these last few years following The Other McCain's advice on "How to Get a Million Hits on Your Blog in Less Than a Year." Sure, the babe blogging around here's become a major pastime, but actually, the idea of building community through "reciprocal linkage" has been one of the more important elements of my program. Folks need to exercise the "The Full Metal Jacket Reach-Around":
Reciprocal linkage is the essential lubricant that makes the blogosphere purr with contentment. If somebody's throwing you traffic, you should either (a) give them a link-back update, or at a minimum (b) keep them in mind for future linkage. Because you don't want to end up on the wrong end of a kharmic unbalance in the 'sphere, where you're always taking and never giving.
As blogging has become almost exclusively professionalized in the last few years, the notion of "The Full Metal Jacket Reach-Around" seems kind of quaint. But don't be fooled. We've still got lots of independent bloggers out there doing what the mainstream press refuses to do. For example, Robert mentions Professor William Jacobson's Legal Insurrection as a model of high-impact professional blogging to which we should all aspire. And of course Glenn Reynolds continues to plug away at Instapundit, resisting the lucrative lure of a huge corporate sponsor (even more lucrative, that is, as Glenn's already got great model of monetization). There are lots more examples --- and apologies to some of the great new blogs, like Rebel Pundit and SOOPER Mexican, for not highlighting their work more often --- although it's clear there are increasing sustainability issues for smaller "mom and pop" blogging outfits. Here's how Robert describes the problem at The Other McCain:
This network/community concept seems to have been lost by (or, more likely, was never known to) newer arrivals in the ‘sphere. The idea that each of us is contributing to a common project is not just some kind of “Stone Soup” idealism, but is in fact the only way to build any genuinely meaningful alternative to that pathetic exercise in groupthink we call the Mainstream Media. Bloggers who don’t help build the alternative can complain about the MSM “borg” all they want; they aren’t really making a difference. There are two ways in which bloggers actually help sabotage the blogosphere:
Turn your blog into a series of lectures...

Never link another blogger. It’s weird that some bloggers would rather link a story in the New York Times or the Washington Post than to link a fellow blogger. Why this is, I don’t know. Sometimes it seems like everybody has the same idea: Grab an MSM headline off Drudge, link it, include a brief blockquote and add some political snark. Not only does this effectively surrender content control to Drudge — so that bloggers are merely replicating the headline selection there — but nobody’s snark ever goes beyond their own readership, because no blogger ever quotes another blogger.
Be sure to read the rest for additional insight.

Those bloggers who "never link another blogger" are the kinds I generally avoid. Sure, few bloggers can worry about linking all their buddies all the time, but throwing some hits to your friends once in a while is the friendly thing to do, especially when you've been a mensch yourself, linking and forwarding your posts with breaking news and so forth. Which is why I was surprised yesterday at popular pro-life blogger Jill Stanek. I woke up about 4:00am and wrote a post on WND's piece on Planned Parenthood's grotesque sex education promotions ("Sex-ed cartoons 'too graphic' for N.Y. Times." I later tweeted it to Robert and cc'd Jill:

Then checking back on Twitter about an hour later I see Jill in my timeline with a new blog post:

Jill's post is time-stamped at 4:14pm in the afternoon, 1:14pm Pacific time, 50 minutes after I tweeted my link to her. Now, perhaps Jill had her entry all queued up or was already familiar with WND's reporting. I don't know. I can say that Jill isn't a big proponent of the Full Metal Reach Around community-building strategy. I've sent her lots of stuff in the past and have been linked perhaps a couple of times at her blog. I don't know. Perhaps she wanted to have this Planned Parenthood "scoop" all to herself, with no hat tip to WND, much less myself. That's how some bloggers roll. It's not the best way to build community, in any case.

Again, maybe Jill got that post going without ever seeing my tweet. But if it were me, I'd probably have replied on Twitter in the first place and then posted a hat tip if I blogged it. Your mileage may vary.

Either way, I couldn't help thinking that yesterday was one good example of the lack of collaboration in the blogosphere. And it's not an insignificant issue. Now more than ever American democracy needs alternative voices. American politics needs citizens to upend the establishment narrative. People frankly need to build on the social media revolution to bring greater accountability to government at at time when the press has abdicated its historic role as freedom's watchdog. Bloggers are upsetting and will continue to upset the accepted memes and force big media to report real news that's important to real Americans. Along with other forms of citizens' social media, blogs promote accountability and deliberation. William Jacobson had something on that yesterday, "If not for prior #Gosnell Twitter campaign, would MSM be covering Bronx and DC revelations?"

But "social" means you can't do it alone. The best of the top bloggers recognize the vital role newbies play in keeping the 'sphere an essential place for alternative reporting. And new bloggers entering the arena might heed the warnings of The Other McCain (and others) on the dangers of the death of collaboration in the independent blogosphere.

Robert Stacy McCain's Full Metal Blogging

I'm still holding out on switching to the full advertising mode for this blog (although PrivatePigg certainly warmed me up to it a bit), but if folks have contemplated making a living as a blogger, look no further than Robert Stacy McCain for inspiration.

"
The Other McCain" likes folks to call him by his middle name, so go check out "Stacy's" blog for today's lesson on building traffic, "Notes on Rule 4 ("Make Some Enemies"), which is a reference to a key section in his landmark recent post, "How to Get a Million Hits on Your Blog in Less Than a Year."

Jamie Colby

If you read Stacy's stuff regularly, you'll find that nothing's sacred - no issue and no blogger can find a snark-free zone when "Mr. Qwerty-quick" fingertips is on the assignment. Stacy's fair though - perhaps to a fault - as we can see in the decency of his commentary on Andrew Sullivan - a guy who's pretty much gone overboard, but perhaps has enough in the political-capital bank to stay relevant to the left-wing. And be sure to check Stacy's link to this essay at The Nation, where the "excitable one's" identification as "the neoconservative gay pundit" just about made me boogie to the bathroom on a porcelain-hurl run (and don't even get me going about the post-neo pomos at the Extraordinary Gentlemen!)

But read the whole post, in any case, "
How to Get a Million Hits on Your Blog in Less Than a Year, and especially "Rule #5" on "hottie blogging":

* A. Everybody loves a pretty girl -- It's not just guys who enjoy staring at pictures of hotties. If you've ever picked up Cosmo or Glamour, you realize that chicks enjoy looking at pretty girls, too. (NTTAWWT.) Maybe it's the vicious catty she-thinks-she's-all-that factor, or the schadenfreude of watching a human trainwreck like Britney Spears, but no one can argue that celebrity babes generate traffic. Over at Conservative Grapevine, the most popular links are always the bikini pictures. And try as I might to make "logical arguments" for tax cuts, wouldn't you rather watch Michelle Lee Muccio make those arguments?
Now you know why I've got that beautiful picture of Fox News' Jamie Colby up there on top. Coffee and Colby on the weekends is what gets me fired-up for my heavy-duty early-morning writing sessions (I wrote an essay on the Fairness Doctrine this morning for Pajamas, which will probably be available early next week). So, there'll be more women around here, and folks'll have a bit of a respite from the full-bore high-powered neoconservative analysis that's the staple of American Power.

But wait! I'm currently working on Stacy's last directive:

* D. Feminism sucks -- You can never go wrong in the blogosphere by having a laugh at the expense of feminists. All sane people hate feminism, and no one hates feminism more than smart, successful, independent women who've made it on their own without all that idiotic "Sisterhood Is Powerful" groupthink crap.
That's right. I picked up a copy of Andrea Dworkin's Intercourse last night, which includes this for a teaser:

Can a man read Intercourse? ... Can a man read a book written by a woman in which she, the author, has a direct relationship to experience, ideas, literature, life, including fucking, without mediation - such that what she says and how she says it are not determined by boundaries men have set for her? Can a man read a woman's work if it does not say what he already knows? Can a man let in a challenge not just to his dominance but to his cognition? And, specifically, am I saying that I know more than men about fucking? Yes, I am. Not just different: more and better, deeper and wider, the way anyone used knows the user.
And that's just from the preface, so I'll keep readers updated with further installments from Intercourse (but check Cassy Fiano in the meanwhile, who's practiced at smacking-down the Dworkin-types).

In any case, that's all for this installment of the "
Full-Metal Blogging" thing!

Full Metal Saturday Challenge!

I got in on the ground floor of "Robert Stacy McCain's Full Metal Blogging."

It's a good thing, too, since "The Other McCain's" traffic-building, link-ragin' sensation is attracting quite a following. In fact, Moe Lane's looking to escalate the genre, throwing down the gauntlet with his post, "You Want Rule #5, RS McCain?," which includes the video from Rafael Defense Systems' promotional Bollywood dance sequence for the Aero India 2009 air-show in Bangalore.

That's good stuff, no doubt, but if folks are escalating to fire-cracker hot videos, I'm laying down some jams with Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, a.k.a, Lady Gaga! I like the Lady's influences, but she's a bit too hot, in fact, although I'm still hankering for more bikini shots of Katy Perry!

Some of our blogging partners are keeping things on the up and up, of course.
Pundette's got a thorough link roundup in, "Saturday Link-Fest 3/21." That entry links to British blogger, Marianne, who's asks new friends to stop by and peek over her "virtual picket fence" once in a while.

Little Miss Attila gets into the action as well, with inside-intel on Robert Stacy McCain's California conservative conferencing action! She links to Suzanna Logan, who's been hyper-scaling the stats on Sitemeter, garnering some Instalanche action!

Dan Collins is kicking up a storm in the hot side-gig at Protein Wisdom's Pub, so check it out.

But see also Jason at The Western Experience, who's more concerned with "
nation-blanketing in Afghanistan" than the more down-home diversions of babe-blogging.

**********

P.S.:
Lady Gaga's about as far as I'm going to go on the hotness scale. As much as I like Blake Lively, there's something a bit forward in Rolling Stone's cover story this week, especially for parents imploring "Keep it in your britches, son."

**********

P.P.S.: If American Power readers would like their blogs included in some of my link-explosion roundups, just
drop me an e-mail and I'd be glad to spread some link love.
