California's Descent to Socialism

From Joel Kotkin, at the O.C. Register:
California is widely celebrated as the fount of technical, cultural and political innovation. Now we seem primed to outdo even ourselves, creating a new kind of socialism that, in the end, more resembles feudalism than social democracy.

The new consensus is being pushed by, among others, hedge-fund-billionaire-turned-green-patriarch Tom Steyer. The financier now insists that, to reverse our worsening inequality, we must double down on environmental and land-use regulation, and make up for it by boosting subsidies for the struggling poor and middle class. This new progressive synthesis promises not upward mobility and independence, but rather the prospect of turning most Californians into either tax slaves or dependent serfs...

My Apostasy from the Church of Critical Theory

From Reza Ziai, at Areo:

In 1997 I earned a Masters degree in psychology from Duquesne University, a Catholic university in Pittsburgh, PA. At the time, Duquesne was one of only a few schools in the country with an emphasis in existential phenomenological psychology that was also accredited by the American Psychological Association. So, off I went.

Twice a week, for three semesters I carried to class Being and Time, a bible-shaped book by Martin Heidegger (who, although his private beliefs are still contested, was, in fact, literally a Nazi) across a courtyard under a really creepy fifteen-foot tall statue of Christ’s now very well-known execution.

In virtually every class, I was told that all scientific knowledge, and even science itself was founded on Western cultural constructions and was to be regarded as hegemonic. And since each of the world’s various cultural viewpoints were enmeshed in their own historicity, each respective one (especially the Western one) could only be understood in terms relative to all the others. Accordingly, objective truths did not exist. We were all taught that “reality” was the exact equivalent of how you perceive it...

The Left's Disgraceful Drive to Overturn the 2016 Election

From Pat Buchanan, at Town Hall, "The Impeach-Trump Conspiracy":
Pressed by Megyn Kelly on his ties to President Trump, an exasperated Vladimir Putin blurted out, "We had no relationship at all. ... I never met him. ... Have you all lost your senses over there?"

Yes, Vlad, we have.

Consider the questions that have convulsed this city since the Trump triumph, and raised talk of impeachment.

Did Trump collude with Russians to hack the DNC emails and move the goods to WikiLeaks, thus revealing the state secret that DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz was putting the screws to poor Bernie Sanders?

If not Trump himself, did campaign aides collude with the KGB?

Now, given that our NSA and CIA seemingly intercept everything Russians say to Americans, why is our fabled FBI, having investigated for a year, unable to give us a definitive yes or no?

The snail's pace of the FBI investigation explains Trump's frustration. What explains the FBI's torpor? If J. Edgar Hoover had moved at this pace, John Dillinger would have died of old age.

We hear daily on cable TV of the "Trump-Russia" scandal. Yet, no one has been charged with collusion, and every intelligence official, past or prevent, who has spoken out has echoed ex-acting CIA Director Mike Morrell:

"On the question of the Trump campaign conspiring with the Russians here, there is smoke, but there is no fire, at all. ... There's no little campfire, there's no little candle, there's no spark."

Where are the criminals? Where is the crime?

Mandy Harvey Earns Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell (VIDEO)

My sister shared this with me on Facebook.

I don't blog about it a lot, but I'm partially deaf. I lost my hearing after a head injury while seeing Charged GBH in Pasadena in 1983. Some hearing returned to my left ear. I read lips, although I never learned how to sign. I was always self-conscious of deafness, about how this somehow made me less than I was. It was an enormous personal, emotional, physical, and psychological blow. I imagine I've overcompensated for it since the injury, which is my entire life now.

So you can imagine how this moment from "America's Got Talent" makes me cry. And you can understand why my baby sister wanted me to see it.

And this woman Ms. Mandy is astounding. She's a monument to human perseverance and goodness in the world. Everyone feels at some point that they want to give up. The hardiest among us resist, but not everyone's got the strength. God gave me strength. I didn't know it at the time, but I prayed. Now I now it. I know Ms. Mandy's got God as well. She beautiful.

Evelyn Taft's Slightly Warmer Forecast

I finished up my semester grading today and watched some baseball late this afternoon. Had a few beers with my old grad school buddy as well.

I have 11 weeks off and I'm gonna make the most of it, heh.

The weather's just started to reach summer perfection. By July 4th it's going to be just right.

Here's the lovely Ms. Evelyn, for CBS News 2 Los Angeles:

If You're a Jew in Britain, It's Time for Your Own Brexit

From a "Soldier's Mother," Paula K. Stern, at Israelly Cool, "A Message for U.K. Jews."

And at Paula's blog, "Is today the day to leave England?":
The good news is that Jeremy Corbyn didn't win the election. Teresa May and the Conservative Party won by the numbers. But there are few today viewing the results of the election who fail to see that a clear message was sent. The only question is to whom the message was directed, and will they listen.

The Labour Party gained 28 seats, which is a victory in itself, but they are not in control. Not yet. Had the Labour Party been in the hands of a different main contender, we could think this was politics as normal. But it wasn't, and so it isn't.

This morning in the UK is very different than it was yesterday.

The Conservative party won in seats and votes, but lost 11 places in the Parliament. A stunning victory by Labour puts them at 259, a gain of 28 and puts Jeremy Corbyn within striking distance of the Prime Minister's office. Not this time, but maybe next time.

I will leave it to the UK to figure out the message that was sent yesterday. What it means for where England is headed - for its citizens and for the world is more than I can contemplate on a busy Friday with Shabbat just hours away.

For all intents and purposes, there is now a "hung Parliament" that is unlikely to accomplish much and may well send the country into new elections in the near future. That is the nature of the electoral system they have, as it is the one we inherited from them.

What is on my mind is something more personal, closer to my heart. If you are a Jew in Britain and you are not looking for your own "Brexit," you are making an appalling and perhaps even costly mistake. Read that sentence again. Does it scare you - it should. It frightens me. But what you'll find, if you search deep in your heart, is that it may annoy you, but you can't quite deny it, can you? It doesn't surprise you that there could be a time when you have to leave...as a few generations ago, too many didn't. You know that time may come...pretty much every Jew in the world knows that. This is the ultimate lesson of the Holocaust. You may love where you live, but there will always lurk the knowledge that no matter how comfortable it might be today, tomorrow it could change.

The only real question you have today in the UK if you are Jewish is whether today is the day to leave...

Former Scottish National Party Leader Alex Salmond Loses Seat to Tories

Election results are still come in across the pond, and so far the Conservatives look to lose their majority, with a so-called "hung parliament" in the Commons.

More on that later.

Meanwhile, Alex Salmon's loss deals the SNP a huge blow, with party leader Nicola Sturgeon saying demands for a second Scottish independence referendum are "on hold."
