Al and Tipper Gore to Separate After 40-Years of Marriage

At CNN, "BREAKING: Al and Tipper Gore decide to separate." The announcement's at Politico as well, "Al and Tipper Gore to separate."

Yep, that was a fake kiss at the Democratic National Convention in 2000:

Expect updates (any John Edwards moments for the Gores?) ...

That kiss was almost 10 years ago. How can anyone say it was fake? They may have both said that their marriage was a happy and complete one. I'm sure they didn't decide just yesterday to split up, but it may have been - and probably was - the furthest thing from their minds 10 years ago.

It's hard to believe that two such loathsome creatures could stay together that long.

I can't say whether that kiss was fake (I lack the superpowers that allow Don to just inherently and definitively "know" so many of the things he claims to) but it was definitely weirdly awkward and a symptom of our American compulsion to require that our politicians prove that they're everyday Joes who are just like the rest of us.

I'm not saying that a politician's family life is unimportant but I find it strange that it's the only occupation that requires one to trot their spouse and children out on a stage in order to get the job they're applying for.

You're the Jefferson to my Adam's, but here we agree, that's right, James. It is the same in the corporate world. It is another version of political correctness, in my opinion. In spite of the endless affairs of JFK or the fidelity of Reagan the marriage wasn’t relevant to their being great presidents. I deeply believe in the family tradition, but I often wish Americans could better handle real transparency, ease off on the Calvinistic critical judgments. Then politicians who now cheat on their wives could just divorce and play the field and be done with it, instead of cheating while holding on to the necessary image of the perfect marriage. I have been married three times. This alone might keep me from public office.
