Cynthia McKinney at Long Beach City College

Cynthia McKinney, the former U.S. Representative and 2008 Green Party presidential nominee, spoke at Long Beach City College today. Ms. McKinney visited the campus at the invitation of the college's Cultural Affairs Council, in honor of Women's History Month.

The talk was poorly attended. Perhaps four people were in the audience. Before speaking Ms. McKinney approached me and I introduced myself as a professor at the college. I also spoke with her for a few more minutes after her prepared comments.

Ms. McKinney is friendly and polite in person. Upon my introduction, she mentioned that her "dream" was to become a college professor. When I inquired as to her training and qualifications - perhaps in the law - it seemed as though her lack of professional credentials in such areas were a disappointment to her. She asked if she could put me on her e-mailing list, so I gave her my business card and thanked her for visiting. Talking with her in such a cordial yet intimate fashion was interesting - particularly in my case, as a blogger who routinely exposes and repudiates the radical politics for which Ms. McKinney advocates.

She had prepared comments on her recent ill-fated "humanitarian" mission to Gaza during Israel's December campaign against Palestinian rocket attacks. The best report on this is from Israel Matzav, "
Moonbat McKinney's Boat Turned Back by Israeli Navy."

In Ms. McKinney's recounting, the boat on which she was travelling was being pursued by Israeli gunships. The Israeli navy had allegedly harassed her boat with menacing search lights, in a belligerent cat-and-mouse fashion, and then finally surrounded her vessel. Ms. McKinney claimed to have been rammed by one of the Israeli ships: "I think they were trying to kill us ... that's the only explanation" for being hit, she said. Ms. McKinney went on to explain how harrowing was the experience, as she "can't swim" and was wearing "no life jacket."

She mentioned that two lawsuits were currently in preparation, one by the
Free Gaza Movement, who had sponsored the humanitarian mission, and the other by the "Malaysia Peace Organization." According to Free Gaza, " The movement organizers are pursuing legal actions against the government of Israel for piracy on the high seas as well as damages to the boat. Estimates range from 100 to 150 thousand euros and will take five months to repair."

Yet, for all of this, Ms. McKinney appeared as something of a wastrel of the social justice movement. Perhaps due to sparse attendence and no media, Ms. McKinney's discussion came off as the hopeless wimperings of a preposterous victim. This was not what I expected from one who is otherwise reputed as a morally righteous freedom fighter in the international peace movement. There was, for example, nothing approaching the fire-breathing manifesto seen
in the video above, which features Ms. McKinney's speech to the Re-Create '68 rally outside at Democratic convention last August. As well, she did not say, as she had in December 2008, that "What I am recommending is the creation of a political movement inside my country that will constitute a surgical strike for global justice." No, the former presidential candidate appeared much like a spent nuclear rod, highly radioactive but small in volume.

Ms. McKinney said she had no immediate plans to run for public office. She did indicate that she'll continue her networking within the social justice movement. And with that I wished her well and said goodbye.

Donald, when you humanize her like that, you take all the fun out of drubbing her. I have very mixed feelings about that.

Oh. Thank you. *grumble*

Donald..when you put it like that, she is rather pathetic after all, isn't she?

Everyone gets their 'come-uppance' sooner or later.

Most radicals are pathetic once they move away from their sycophants.

Dan: I do enough "dehumanizing" around here, no? Just put it out there straight, and she comes off pretty pathetic as it is...

Thanks Jan. She didn't seem to have much to look forward to ...

Good job of cleaning up your comments, Philippe.

It would not surprise me in the least if the young men and women in the Israeli navy played rough with her boat. Israel is a free and open society and it would not be difficult to google the story of their mission, exactly who the passengers were, and their total hatred of Israel. Ms. McKinney and her friends were playing in the Israeli navy's home court; and the home team was not playing for fun. Ms. McKinney spouted for years her hatred of Israel, and she finally
got hit by reality.

Perfectly said, Norm. I'm not sympathetic to her at all. What a sob story...

Norm,

That made about as much sense as a can of rotten eggs, inspite of Douglas's praise for your support of military thuggary and intimidation.

YOu just said, "Israel is a free and open society........." and then in the same paragraph, you go on to praise the national Navy of Israel for its intimidation of a civilian because of her "hatred of Israel".

Any other independent observers here that can substantiate this rather ridiculous contradiction? Can you clarify this for me NOrm? If "Israel is a free and open society", then why is their national military intimidating opposing voices?

You folk are a riot.

C.S.: You're not welcome here, remember? Hit the road...

Touche, Don. Your attempted insult towards me in another thread combined with this current brilliant turn of the phrase "hit the road" in my opinion absolutely personify "the free and open discussions in the comments section" Philippe mentioned above. I guess class isn't important outside of the classroom, huh?

JBW: C.S. is a troll, plain and simple. C.S. and the others are why I turned on comment moderation. It's past debating with these folks ... its' abuse.

JBW said...

Oh yeah Don, it's past debating with the "nihilist" nutballs but the majority of your right-wing acolytes personify open-mindedness and acceptance of new ideas. You met McKinney and said that she's a nice person yet the first thing your commenters do is tear her down because they disagree with her views. It's just one big love fest here.

Wow, I just realized how useless writing this comment has been. I'm out.

Whatever keeps this hideous, racist woman the hell out of Georgia.

She, along with Maxine Waters, were a major drag on the mean IQ of an already intellectually challenged House.

Needless to say, we don't miss her at all around here, as she was becoming somewhat of an embarrassment.

Its just too bad she didn't take Cynthia Tucker with her when she fled to California.

JBW: Actually, I'm a nice person for saying nice things about her. Believe me, it took some effort to be cordial, but that's part of being professional. The commenters speak for themselves. Racist comments will be deleted, so flag those, and Grace has been asked to tone it down or leave, and I think she left. Okay?

CS,

Seeing that Donald doesn't want you slithering around his threads anymore, why don't you sign up over at NewsBusters?

As I am the Official Assistant Troll Greeter over there, and given that we are currently suffering from a real dearth of turdlet-droppers, as most of our Obamabot trolls have tucked tail and run for the tall grass over the last couple of weeks due to acute cases of buyer's remorse, we could use some new trolls.

I have about a hundred + friends over there, many who are currently serving in Iraq and Ashchanistan and who, when you post things like, "military thuggary and intimidation," are going to have all kinds of fun with you.

:-)

Thanks for reminding me not to demonize my opponents. I remember that every 6 months or so.

Don, per your comments at my site:

You hold up your cordialness as some kind of nonpartisan virtue. She was a guest speaker and you're a university professor. To be anything less than cordial would be an embarrassment to your school and a professional mistake on your part.

You were nice to McKinney in person and spoke well of her here; I don't deny that. What I take exception to is the behavior of your regular commenters from the right and your repeated characterization of several of the readers on this site with whom you disagree politically as undebateable trolls while you ignore those you do agree with when they act and speak in the same manner (Grace's recent departure notwithstanding).

My point is that those you consider so horrible on the left are practically identical to those commenters here from the right, yet because of what I can only assume is unaware (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here) hypocrisy you regularly treat the "leftists" as so much trash, and I consider such behavior as detestable as I do most hypocrisy.

Hypocritical case in point: you recently came to my site to alert me to the presence of breasts on your own (which I'm totally cool with) yet warned me about asking stupid questions. My question? If you knew that The Daily Kos was not written by one guy.

Now there are two ways one can interpret that exchange: either I (no slouch in the intelligence department, if I do say so myself) thought that you, an associate professor of political science and an avid blogger, actually thought that The Daily Kos is written by one guy or you missed the meaning of my rhetorical question entirely and tried to make me look foolish as a result.

Your conspicuous silence, even after I tried to call you out on your obvious mistake on your own site, was deafening. As I've said many times in the past, I can accept that we have opposing world views but your lack of intellectual honesty at times is what I repeatedly object to.

I'll be honest with you (I've had more than enough wine at this point): those you so often dismiss as unintelligent bombthrowers have told me repeatedly that you always do this: attack when you think you are right and then remain silent when you have been proven wrong. For some reason you have chosen to respect my viewpoints more than those of many of my brethren on the left. While I appreciate the courtesy, I am determined to take full advantage of the opportunity to speak truth as far as I understand it.

I'll tell you a secret that George W. Bush's daddy never told him: it's OK to be wrong sometimes on some issues. It doesn't make you any less intelligent or any less of a man. It's how honest and rational human beings since the time of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle have conducted themselves and there is no shame in it.

I know that I don't come off as someone who readily admits that I am wrong sometimes (that is a vast understatement on my part) but because of the arguments of friends I respect, and girls I am still trying to sleep with, I am actively working on it and I would hope that you will as well.

As always, you'll respond to these comments if you so choose. Based on your previous track record, I will not be surprised if you do not, but I do have hope.
