The thought that someone who does not share their concept of "intellect" could effectively govern a nation is so anathema to them that they cannot countenance it as truth -- even when it is truth.
Leftists say all sorts of things in public, but in private pride themselves on their hypocrisy. They think the general public is stupid, and whenever they manage to get one over on them they are ecstatic.
Character assassination is one of their favorite ploys. Since Nixon, they've been relentless with it. Thus far, only Ronald reagan has been able to overcome their PR machine when in overdrive and engage in policy-making that ran against their wishes. All the other Republican presidents compromised their own stances when pressed under the barrage; none have ever found a respite from it thereby, and in fact the very act of compromise only emboldens Leftists to new outrages of abuse. As for Democratic presidents, most have simply folded on American principles so as to retain some level of support.
Leftists requently try to find decency lines to cross, so as to violate them in the most outrageous manner and thus get an element of surprise. Don't tell me these tactics don't work. Palin must have assumed that the left would attack her, but almost certainly didn't expect them to go after her children so viciously. Apparently she has put her responsibility as mother over her commitment to the Alaska governorship - unfortunate for the people of Alaska, but one can understand her position. As for the Left, the attacks were calculated for exactly this sort of effect.
We have to remember, at all times, that it is not decent people we are working against that populate this particularly noxious political faction.
