Liberals believe that their ideas, philosophy, worldview, and policies liberate believers, and that the conservative equivalents limit people. Liberals see themselves as rejecting outdated beliefs and obsolete ideas, overturning established orders, and discarding traditions established by superstitious and ignorant forebears who weren't as enlightened as we are. Conservatives, in their minds, are runaway cultural superegos, always wagging their fingers about individual responsibility, dismissing excuses, reminding people that they can't always do what they want because of the consequences to themselves and to others.
Conservatism, they suspect, will leave you in a marriage that doesn't satisfy you, burden you with children you don't want, repress your passions, and trap you in a empty, boring, and unfulfilled life, with no hand of government able to help.
Today almost everyone faces some sort of challenge in balancing work and family; I don't know too many people who believe there are sufficient hours in a day. And then along comes this woman who's made all of these "conservative" choices and now has an amazing career, a supportive husband, a beautiful family, and great health and appearance, and she bears it all, including the inevitable hard times, with pluck and a smile, as far as we can tell. (For all we know, perhaps behind closed doors, Sarah Palin screams into a pillow when it all gets to be too much. But what we know about her suggests she relieves her stress by shooting moose.)

And the irony is ... it is the Left who are the kings and queens of the litmus test.
If your viewpoint significantly deviates from their narrow conventional wisdom ... on subjects ranging from abortion to climate change to economic "justice" ... you are, in their eyes, simply not a "free thinker".
That is because, in their (il)logic, the proof of freedom of thought is that you MUST hold viewpoints that run counter to "traditonal" values ... including values that have been validated by history as serving humanity well.
Like I said to someone here the other day, it is they that are closer to the Iranian theocrats than are conservatives ... for they seek to suppress all other viewpoints except their own narrow view -- even when their viewpoint is based on faith in their own perceptual abilities.
She relieves her stress by quitting, Donald.
Methinks she's not "quitting", Green Eagle ... but executing a tactical change in support of both Alaskan and national objectives, instead.
Would that more elected conservatives before her didn't employ that same tactic of serving their constituents best by leaving office prior to completing their terms in office. On the bright side, maybe she will start a trend, and other elected and appointed conservatives will realize that the best way they can serve the people and places they represent is by getting out of office. Immediately, if possible.
Combine this with the logic that says having Franken in office as the filibuster-busting 60th senator is a good thing, because it grants the Dems all the power they need to screw up unopposed--and how I thought after that what a good thing it'd be if more elected and appointed conservative representatives--like Palin, apparently--did you the favor of leaving office. (But... Isn't that all too similar to the "it has to get worse, to get better" way of thinkin'-rumored to be a Leninist strategy, where one heightens the contradictions between what a party or class promises, and what they actually delivers; the more folks are hurting, the more willing and receptive they'll be to accept new leadership).
Should any other cons wish to "stick it" to liberals by "forcing" them to do the jobs they were elected to do, or to show their leadership and respect for their constituents by leaving office early & getting outta Dodge, I would be most supportive of their wise and considered decisions.
"Liberals see themselves as rejecting outdated beliefs and obsolete ideas..."
Yet they embrace Maxism with both arms.
