slavery always strikes me as such a difficult subject to teach to kids. your son's a very good artist, btw.

I agree it is tough to teach the subject of slavery, unless it is taught comprehensively. I think slavery should be taught in the context of world history, not just American History. Include the involvement of the African slave-trade leaders that also built their economy on an internal slave market. Cover the B.C.E. origins and the immoral concept of slavery, but include the black Caribbean slave masters, the white slaves of the Islamics, the brave white Christian abolitionists, the Southern economic implications of the Civil War and relentless Jim Crow that followed, to be sure, but also the black and white heroes of the Civil Rights movement MLK, JFK, LBJ et.al. Cover it all, and how the United States Constitution protects minorities. It is a grim tale with a good end. We have black academic, military and athlete heroes. We have a black president. We also have enough misplaced white guilt in this country, especially from the left.

Trish: My son is 14, and he's taken some art classes. He has some career aspirations in art, so I'm proud of him.

Rusty, my previous post with your comment was deleted accidentally. Thanks about your informed opinion. My son has had natural talent since he was a baby, and we had him in art school for a while. He may continue that in high school and college, so we'll be in touch. I told him you're an artist.
