The Necessity of Peace

I was just struck by this photograph at Wordsmith's post at Flopping Aces, "The Burden of Peace is on Hamas and Palestinians":

Hamas Civilian Deaths

A girl was among the dead in the air strike. About 30 people were inside the house when it was destroyed, neighbors said. Photo: Mohammed Abed/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images.

No one is unaffected by the civilian casualities. But it's precisely images like these which are used by Hamas for diabolical propaganda puposes. Israel has been extremely judicious in abiding by the laws of war and in conducting its campaign with respect for human rights and the prevention of civilian deaths. As Yaacov Lozowick notes:

Hamas has been stockpiling weapons in civilian homes. This is against international law, but since I'm no great fan of international law I mention it only to note all the media outlets who aren't mentioning it - the folks who cannot formulate a sentence about Israel's policies without telling about whatever Israel is doing which is illegal. Those hypocrites, you know. But I digress.

According to the laws of war, placing military ordinance in civilian settings is forbidden because it erases the line between civilians and soldiers, and since getting at the soldiers so as to kill them is permitted, civilians will inevitably also be killed. Hezbullah, Hamas, and the Fatah-based Palestinian terrorists never put any store in any of that just-war theory or practice, since in their self understanding they are victims, period, and no matter what they do will always be justified. Their useful idiots in the West parrot this alongside them, thus demonstrating their rejection of the noble heritage of the Enlightenment.

The practice has booby-trapped Israel, of course. If we hit the terrorists along with their civilian shields, we're damned for waging war on civilians. If we refrain, so as not to be damned, the terrorists are safe, and sooner or later they'll kill Israelis.

The advance of technology, however, has created new possibilities. In the week of air-attacks, the IDF proved it had excellent intelligence, and in many cases targets hit from the air kept on exploding for a number of minutes after they were hit, as the ordinance stored there exploded. More significant, the IDF has figured out how to separate the civilians from the weapons:
call the neighbors and give them ten minutes warning. The numbers prove how efficient this has been: prior to the ground invasion, more than 600 targets had been destroyed, fewer than 500 Palestinians killed, and fewer than 100 of those were civilians even by Palestinian and UN reckoning. Of course, there remain the pictures of civilians surrounded by devastation, but they're alive, and it wasn't Israel that stacked bombs in their cellars.

Apparently, by Friday Israel had made at least 9,000 (nine thousand) such phone calls. Here's an American website touching upon
the same story.

Alongside the thousands of civilians whose lives have been spared there are hundreds, at least, of armed Hamas fighters, the people who put the explosives in the cellars in the first place: by warning their neighbors, Israel has warned them, too, thus giving them the chance to escape and fight another day: say, tonight, or tomorrow, when they'll still be alive to fight the IDF troops, instead of lying dead under the rubble, as would have been possible had we hit their explosive stashes without prior warning, as any normal army wold have done.
Humanitarian warfare ... the burden of peace ... and the necessity.

French TV claims photos from 2005 showed damage from Israel's Gaza operation
By Haaretz Service

French public television network France 2 on Tuesday revealed they had aired photographs that allegedly showed destruction caused by the Israel Air Force during Operation Cast Lead, which were in fact taken during a different incident in 2005, one in which Gaza civilians were killed by an explosion caused by militants in the Strip.

The footage aired on Channel 2 on Tuesday afternoon showed dozens of dead bodies, including Hamas gunmen and citizens, which the channel said were killed by an IAF bombing raid on January 1st. It later came to light that the channel had instead aired footage of the devastation caused after a truck full of explosives blew up in the Jabaliya Refugee Camp.

A news editor at France 2 told Le Figaro Tuesday that they had "made a mistake by airing those pictures, which he said depict events from 2005.

Yes, but sometimes people must fight wars, Philippe.

It is tragic. It is wrong that we must fight - but it is because of wrongs we must fight - and thus it is wrong if we do not fight.

War is hell. The hatred which calls for the genocide of the Jews betrays all human dignity and necessitates war as the seed of the conflict. Those who cry "Peace, peace" where there is no peace should be calling the Arab world to the love of the Jew - their brothers and sisters made in the same image of God.

The Palestinians must give up their hate or there will be no peace. They will continue to harbor war and terrorism in their hearts so long as the world and they do not condemn the hate that demands genocide and refuses to practice brotherly love.

(I kind of like my quote I just did. It's an original quote.) I just reread it... oh the circle in which we are trapped and trap ourselves with no hope of escape so long as we look to ourselves.... and our own interests.

The audacity of Khaled Mashaal, the Hamas supreme leader, who called for the launch of a third intifada from exile in Syria.

Mashaal wakes up in the safety of Damascus, turns on the television, reads the paper and then says live on Al Jazeera TV – where else? – that “we want armed resistance, a military uprising to face the enemy”. Couldn’t he smuggle himself into the Gaza Strip to be with his resistance fighters?

All HAMAS has to show after all this time and money from Gulf States and rowdy foreigners are little more than long-range fireworks that they fire off into neighbouring towns but which do more damage to HAMAS' own image than to any infrastructure in Little Satan

Ultimately, Khaled Mashaal, who declared from far away Damascus, that the resistance “has lost very few people” as the body count soars.

Time for HAMAS to step down. By any standards these cats have been a spectacular failure.

HAMAS failed in peace, failed in governance, and moreover failed in war. In addition to Hamas’s ambiguous political agenda, their goal seems to be resistance for the sake of resistance, a quagmire where the journey really is the destination.

It is time for Khaled Mashaal and his freely elected suicide regime to step down and allow more competent leaders to emerge before he causes even more damage to the concept of Palestine.

The quiz is if HAMAS leaves, what is the alternative?

When I saw that picture of the child, I did have an issue with that. It was so shocking... and it didn't seem right. A person wouldn't just "check for a pulse" with the extended hand. A person would just pull the child out of the rubble right away, then check for life. It really didn't occur to me... because I was just thinking about how wrong it seemed... and I think I just "turned away" inside not thinking about it more because it was so troubling a site to see a child like that. But it's absolutely true. They should have pulled the child out immediately and checked for life. To pose like that is completely wrong. It's either that the child really was buried and they cared more for the "photo op" then they did for the child's life - or the entire scene was staged and they took a child's body and posed her like that for propaganda.

It's very upsetting, honestly, to see the pic in the first place... then to go back and consider what it all means and how it was set up is honestly very emotional that people would use a little child like that and care more about creating a sense of "victimhood" than they REALLY care about that little child. That's such upsetting callous cruelty to do to "one's own" little children to use them that way. Sigh - because that is truly wrenching to a person's heart - this mom's heart at least.

I think an Israelite said that the Palestinians and Muslims will stop perpetuating acts of terrorism and aggression against Israel when they love their children more than they hate Israel. Sadly, this picture shows exactly that truism failing. It really does seem to me that they hated Israel more than they loved that little child - and that's more upsetting of an image to me than if the child had truly been an innocent victim that they truly loved as her people. Their despite for Israel is so malignant - but to not love their own children?? As a mother, I can't hardly consider the grievousness of that.

I really believe I would lay down my life for my children - and I can't see how that love doesn't exist in people's hearts when they send their children to be killed for advancement of hate in suicide bombings... and then they pose a picture like this.

I can't even put in words what it's like to see that and really re-consider that picture and what it really seems to speak to me with that update.

They're never taught love in that society. They're taught hate as the #1 value - hatred of their enemies is the #1 value that religion, it seems to me, teaches. They're fixated on it and they think that is their "solution" is to destroy those they define as enemies: "infidels" and "Jews" and those that don't follow their "Sharia law". And they think that if they can just kill people - then they will have "peace"... they will have their "ultimate mission". To me, that's de-humanization, de-civilization, and anti everything that is good and right and true and truly matters.

That picture is moving beyond words - now seeing potentially what it reveals of the heart and character of this "conflict".

Unfortunately I am not surprised by any of this. They have a history of using civilians, dead or alive for their purposes. It is simple exploitation, pure and simple.

One of the few things that will convince people to disregard the lives of their own children is religion. Abraham knew it and the thugs in Hamas know it too. Islam is but one of many. Remember that.

JBW,

Keep in mind that Hamas didn't exist until 1987 so its disengenious to associate the rise of Hamas with some purely fundamentalist cause. I suspect that the rise Hamas has much more to do with the immediate desperation of Palestinians. As you can see neocon/"Israel can do no wrong" folks are quick on the trigger to associate any walking, talking Arab as an extremist fundamentalist. I suspect half the world's extremist bigots live in spotted areas around the American bible belt and not in the middle-east or elsewhere.

All fun a side, I am sure you realise that a more nuanced perspective is needed here.

Cheers

Speaking of fundamentalist extremists, I think one was spotted right in this blog entry. So we don't need to toss the lure in deep sea.

I am sure you know :)

Grace,

Your bigotry is getting tedious and old.

JBW said...

CS, my point was merely that belief in religion makes people say and do stupid things and most of the stupid things happening in Gaza right now are happening because of religion. Obviously not exactly a nuanced position I know, but it's made no less true by it's bluntness.
